Rubulad New York, Venue Description

With the bragging rights as Brooklyn's longest-running underground event, Rubulad is the party that every warehouse party wishes it could be. Fifteen years ago the party started in their South Fifth home and what set it apart from other events was that it was, actually, home. Artists lived where they played and the venue reflected that, tricked out by a palette of wacky artists. It not only looked lived in, it felt that way. Their paranoia of mainstream press further increased their avant-garde appeal. The textured array of talent that is consistently curated by Sari and Chris has set a standard that most nightlife simply cannot replicate. How often does a cover charge of $10 get you so many live performers and DJs plus a bizarre smattering of things you won't see anywhere else? Rubulad exposes a large and diverse audience to disparate and often undiscovered bands. After being closed down numerous times, the Rubulad crew took their show on the road, moving from one venue to another and basically becoming a vagabond event. Now, Chris and Sari are celebrating spring with a fresh start in a new venue, a multi-room film studio that they hope will be home for a while.   Join them on April 15 as they wave farewell to winter and the snows of yestermonths to usher in the season of showers, flowers and powers with Hullaballoomin’! And not a moment too soon. Nightcrawlers have been braving the most brutal winter in memory, with snows as recently as last week. So everyone can easily welcome a bright and bursting blossom-imbued bash! Live performances include the following, with more to be added up until the evening of the event: Morricone Youth: This six-piece ensemble plays music written for film and television by Danny Elfman, Jerry Goldsmith, Henry Mancini as well as, of course, Ennio Morricone and more. Imagine if your life were a wacky Bond-esque adventure movie! This is the band you'd hire to play your score! The Stepkids: Their myspace page says “psychedelic soul” and Goldmine magazine called them a “folk/bluegrass/punk/metal band” but listening to their groovy 60s-esque sound reminds me more of space age bachelor pad music with lyrics. They up the trippy quotient by having visuals projected onto themselves while they play. Lots of aural acrobats from this three-piece ensemble. Spanglish Fly: “Latin soul y bugalú” by this 12-piece band sounds like El Barrio, circa 1968. With Erica Ramos on lead vocals, the room will be cha-cha-ing, si, papi! "What Sharon Jones did for old school soul, what Antibalas did for Afrobeat and what Chicha Libre is doing for chicha, Spanglish Fly is doing for bugalu."   In keeping with the eclecticism, DJ Ursula 1000 will be spinning his “wide-ranging musical project including lounge, breakbeat, glam and cha cha,” while DJ Joro Boro throws down his melange of “etnoteck, glitch-folk and post-national bass - the dirty local side of globalization force-fed back into a party without borders detonating the conglomerated mono-culture.” Together, these two will provide the distinctive soundtrack for the evening, assisted by additional mixmasters to be added after press deadlines. Just added: DJ Hardtop of Motherfucker fame is confirmed! And all of Rubulad's usual artistic entertainment antics will be augmented by Egyptian Shumba, the monster burlesque glitter puppet; cast a critic's eye upon G Scopitronic’s Non-Stop Film Fest; be inspired by the movement of Modern Dance Awareness Society; be dazzled by Norm Francoeur’s Light Circus Extraordinaire; get your money's worth from Yung O's “Dreams and Aspirations Vending Machine”; and sample the delicious snackies by Hot F****ing Tamales. Guests are encouraged to don their finest, most flamboyant florals! Doors at 10pm Shows begin at 11pm   10 beans from before 11 or way late $15 in costume all night $20 otherwise.   21+ w/ ID.
