Detroit - If the “Lost” castaways had ever turned the hatch into a nightclub, it might look a lot like this quirky subterranean lounge. Detroit’s décor is like a 1980s vision of the future: a tunnel-like stairway of stone-coloured stucco walls leads to silver metal doors with orange portholes as retro/funk tunes pump out of the speakers. Further in, the low-ceilinged space features a silver aluminium bar, purple couch, black booths, spaceship-like light fixtures, bits of stained glass, and cave-like nooks that offer privacy but can also be isolating if you’re looking to mingle. In addition to bargain bar snacks like spring rolls and vegetable tempura, Detroit’s biggest strength is its drink list, which features tasty specialty martinis like the Twinkle and the Red Summer (£6.95), as well as shooters, tropical drinks, champagne, and overproof cocktails. Come early for “Seven Heaven” and you’ll score two cocktails for £7 until 7pm, as well as £15 pitchers of frozen mojitos. Surely that will make the décor more bearable. Detroit hosts vinyl nights on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
