Momofuku Ssam Bar - Despite its bizarre name, which in Korean loosely translates to "Lucky Peach Burrito Bar," Momofuku Ssäm Bar is a welcome addition to the vibrant East Village gourmet scene. Unlike its 1st Avenue cousin, Dave Chang’s Momofuku Ssäm Bar specializes in Korean fast food with the ssäm, a delectable lettuce-wrapped burrito filled with pork, chicken, or tofu. The layout of the restaurant is minimalist and streamlined, with wood-paneled walls and cafeteria-style communal tables. The relaxing ambient music is pumped from an employee’s ipod, so don’t expect the same selection with every visit. Until 10pm, the restaurant serves only ‘wrapped’ food items and OB Korean beer, but on Wednesday-Sunday from 10:30pm-2:30am, the Ssäm Bar unveils a slightly more extensive menu for the more sophisticated palate. This place is perfect for a tasty Korean bite, but aside from the food, there’s not much of a draw.
