Summer Highlight: Beauty & Essex

Summer Highlight: Beauty & Essex

Walking into a particular bar/lounge/nightclub for the first time is always a risk. Not the kind of risk that Angel Investors take, but a slew of smaller ones that could end up ruining your night. From having to wait too long behind the velvet rope, dealing with attitude at the door, or potentially ordering a $17 cocktail when you only have a 20 in your pocket... things just come up. But that's all part of the nightlife game. You hear about a place that's a "must-visit," knowing that it could go either way for your night. If it sucks, chances are you won't return, and you'll definitely let your friends know about it. If it turns out to be a winner...well, it's the opposite outcome.

So, when going into our recent Beauty & Essex experience, we'll go into the basics of this LES hotspot:

The Door: Come with the mindset that you'll have to wait a bit. Of course, if you end up pre-partying a bit too much, chances are this wait will be a lot longer. For the most part, the door is run very well, with no attitude so long as you don't give it. A reservation always helps.

The Bar: This isn't your typical LES bar. Cocktails run from $10 to $14, and for a venue that hosts "boujie" aesthetics, that's not too bad. They certainly know how to put together a drink at Beauty & Essex, so at the very least, it's money well spent.

The Music: Face it, there hasn't been a place outside of a concert where you haven't had some constructive criticism about the music format. Sure, we prefer venues that opt out of the Top 40 selection, but unfortunately that's what the masses prefer. While Beauty & Essex does go the open-format route, they do shy away from the Katy Perry/Lady Gaga/J-Lo anthems. Once the old-school hip-hop kicked in, everyone seemed to be on the same wave-length. What grade would we give it? Solid B in our books.

The Crowd:
Guys, if you're looking for attractive women, this is the place. Single ladies seem to come to Beauty & Essex in groups of five, so make sure you come out with wingmen. Unless you have that A-game, then you'll be good for a solo effort. Ladies, while you may run into a couple of "fratty" types here and there, for the most part you'll find quite a large number of well-dressed gentlemen. This could finally be a place where you find a "great guy," or whatever it is you call them now-a-days.

Final Grade: If you're looking to impress or be impressed, we recommend giving Beauty & Essexa try. This is the kind of restaurant/bar/lounge that brings in a great crowd, so prepare give some sort of effort with your attire. We're not saying to pull out the BOSS suit for this one, but remember, it's a trendy place with a great atmosphere and great looking people. Sometimes you need a change of pace if you're more of a bar-type personality. Instead of going the full-mile, this is a great half-way point.
