Top 5 Live Halloween DJ Sets

Halloween is by far one of our favorite holidays. A chance to dress up, drink up and head out to one of the many massive parties around the world is an opportunity we seize year after year, and look back on fondly as the Halloween season rolls around again. In honor of Halloween 2010 and all of the parties just weeks away stocked with DJs and costumes and booze (oh my!), we’ve decided to compile a list of some of the best Halloween DJ sets from the past few years. From electronic music legends like DJ AM, DJ Jazzy Jeff and Tiesto to some lesser-known names like Skratch Bastid, we’ve selected some of our favorite live Halloween DJ sets to get you amped for this year’s Halloween parties. Enjoy!

#1 Best Live Halloween DJ Set
DJ AM at Hard Haunted Mansion, Los Angeles – Halloween 2008

Not only did the late, great DJ AM dress up as Daft Punk member Thomas Bangalter for this Halloween gig (space helmet included), but the DJ played the full part as well, tricking fans by throwing quite a few Daft Punk classics into his Halloween mix. We heard later on that many partygoers at the 2008 Hard Haunted Mansion were actually convinced that Daft Punk had taken the stage (and perhaps we are just breaking the news to some of you reading this) and just for that, we can applaud DJ AM’s Halloween stunt. Props for the creative Halloween costume, the Daft Punk tunes, the wonderful memory and for pranking the shit out of the crowd. Check out video below to see DJ AM channel his inner Daft Punk by spinning “Around the World” into his Halloween 2008 mix at Hard Haunted Mansion in LA.

#2 Best Live Halloween DJ Set
DJ Z-Trip at Supper Club, San Francisco – Halloween 2008

One of the most talented DJs around these days, DJ Z-Trip, gives the crowd a treat as well as a political message in his Halloween 2008 DJ set at San Francisco’s Supper Club. If you think back to Halloween 2008, you’ll remember that this was a time when the Obama campaign was at its most pivotal point. DJ Z-Trip used this to his advantage by mixing Obama’s “This is Our Time” speech into some techno tunes, and from the looks of costumed club, this was definitely a crowd pleaser. We especially love the part when DJ Z-Trip (sporting a white mask and cape) stops the background tunes and lets Obama’s words saturate the nightclub. The crowd goes completely silent, which is something we only see during a powerful set like this one. Check out the footage from DJ Z-Trip’s Halloween 2008 “Obama mix” at Supper Club in San Francisco.

#3 Best Live Halloween DJ Set
Tiesto at Congress Theater, Chicago – Halloween 2009

Whether you’re a Tiesto fan or not, there’s no denying the joy that’s somehow contracted from watching this video. The lights, the energy, and specifically watching Tiesto feel the vibe of the crowd during his Halloween DJ set makes the music even more uplifting (and we can imagine even more powerful for the massive crowd packed into Chicago’s Congress Theater last Halloween). Our favorite dance move comes at about 1:26 when Tiesto turns his back to the crowd and puts his arms out airplane-style as if the tune he’s playing (the Breakfast Remix of DJ Eco’s Lost Angeles) has him soaring above the clouds. Oh, and nice pumpkin-colored jersey, Tiesto. So festive!

#4 Best Live Halloween DJ Set
DJ Jazzy Jeff and Skratch Bastid, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada – Halloween 2009

Halloween 2009 in Halifax brought together some new school sounds and an old school legend for a scratch battle that certainly earns a spot on our list of the top Halloween DJ sets. In this video you’ll see DJ Jazzy Jeff take on Skratch Bastid in a scratch-for-scratch DJ battle/collaboration. We are really digging the sounds of these two and the energy they both bring to the table in this Halloween freestyle session and we especially like to see both Jazzy Jeff and Skratch Bastid grinning from ear to ear throughout most of the show.

#5 Best Live Halloween DJ Set
2 Many DJs at Hard Haunted Mansion, Los Angeles – Halloween 2009

Here’s another great DJ set from Hard Haunted Mansion in Los Angeles, but this time it’s from Halloween 2009 and performed by none other than 2 Many DJs. The vintage visuals compliment the rock-heavy set making this Halloween performance one of our faves. I mean, you know the set is going to be an instant legend when you start off with Rock the Casbah. Watch as the duo takes their Halloween set from classic rock ‘n roll with The Clash and AC/DC to some actually classical music (Beethoven’s Fifth) to some more rock (Guns N Roses) to some Mr Oizo. And keep an eye out for some mau5heads in the audience… nice added touch to this Halloween 2009 DJ set.
