The Elegant New Year's Eve Party 2011

If you prefer watching all the New Year’s Eve madness from a far and preferably indoors, we have you covered. It’s perfectly okay to prefer not to be standing outside in the blistering cold and rubbing up against belligerent total strangers.

For a night of class and sophistication, you’ll need the crème de la crème of everything. A fancy dinner party or a chic cocktail party should do the trick.

First off, location is key. Ideally, a palatial ballroom with mahogany floors, marble bars and floor to ceilings windows draped in velvet would be the best option. Renting out an elegant hotel lobby and serving lavish hor d'oeuvres is also a great option.

The second most important thing to remember is the invitations. Don’t skimp on these as guests will get their initiation impressions of your event from how aesthetically pleasing your invitations are.

Hire staff to make sure all your guests are attended do and have the best time possible. Having this event catered is the best way to go and arguably the only way. An open bar (or cash bar, if you must), lavish hors d'oeuvres and a champagne toast are musts. It doesn’t need to be Moet Rose, but no grocery store champagne or Welch’s sparkling ciders, please.

There’s no need to have a mandatory dress code. Politely stating it’s an upscale cocktail attire type of event should enough. Suggesting it’s a black tie optional but that jackets are suggested for men is sufficient to drop the hint that you have particular expectations of your guests. You can even take your guests away back to a time of glamorous movie stars and exclusive glitterati, by having a themed event.

A live jazz, blues or swing band will be the cherry on top for any elegant and upscale New Year’s Eve dinner party. While this won’t be cheap, it will surely be a night your guests will remember for New Year’s Eves to come.

If you want to go this route but can’t really afford to host your own, try to get an invite from someone who is or just try to find affordable dupes for all the above.
