Pope Paul Returns… To the Hamptons?

by Eats & Beats
06.09.2010

No, I am not referring to the same Pope Paul who held the Papacy from the years 757 to 767. He’s definitely NOT back, although it would be quite a miracle if he ever returned and made the Hamptons his first stop.

The Pope I am referring to is “Pope” Paul Oakenfold, perhaps the greatest DJ to ever walk the Earth (and not just in my opinion – the Guinness Book of World Records recognized him as the most successful DJ in the world).

Ten years ago, at the pinnacle of his global DJ success, I hosted a party for Paul and his label, Perfecto Records, at my castle. He had no idea what the Hamptons were, what the club scene was like, and who the fuck these two wild and crazy brothers living in a castle were planning.

Emily Tan, who is now a renowned journalist for the DJ Times, the leading dance music magazine in the nation, knew even then that if the world’s most famous DJ was going to grace us with his holy presence and a set at Tavern, the pre-party would have to be fit for a king. That led her straight to my castle: one of the most beautiful homes on Earth and the “Holy Land” of the Hamptons for those who love raves and electronic music.

What was set to be a small dinner party for 30 turned into a large dinner party for 300. Among the guests was Seymour Stein, the man who personally gave Madonna her first record contract at Sire Records (and also signed Paul to London/Sire). The party to welcome “Pope Paul” to the Hamptons blew him away. Paul admitted it was the largest house he’d ever been in, and I’m sure he’s been in some pretty big houses. Being that he’s from England, he was used to seeing castles that were 3,000 years old… but not castles that were three years old.

Fast-forward ten years…

Paul Oakenfold is back in the Hamptons for the first time since his performance at Tavern, only this time he’s at Lily Pond. Owner Mike Satsky was sending a message: he will rule the Hamptons nightclub scene this summer even if he has to bring out the big guns.

Well, Satsky picked the right DJ to start the Hampton’s summer “disco war.” Paul blew the roof off of Lily Pond and every VIP table was filled to capacity. I, of course, headed straight to the DJ booth, handed Paul a copy of my new single “Hare Krishna” and told him to call me when he was through if he wanted to party. Unfortunately, he called at 5:15 in the morning when I was half asleep and not really in the mood to keep partying. I told Paul that I would be delighted to throw him another party in my castle for 300 guests – but BEFORE the roosters start crowing, not after! Bloggers need their beauty rest too. Sorry, “Pope” Paul. Please forgive me for the Cardinal Sin of cutting the party short and wanting to go to sleep. I still worship you.

Life at best is short. PARTY TILL YOU DIE!
