WMC Interview: Opium Group’s Carlos Correal

Behind every nightclub there’s a workhorse. A person who does whatever possible to make sure that each and every night the club is open, it’s competing to have the event of the night throughout the city. When it comes to the Opium Group, normally you’d think that there’s an entire department dedicated to this task, but in reality, it all boils down to one man; Carlos Correal. He mans the helm when it comes to the booking game for Opium Group, and recently we caught up with him and chatted a bit about the ridiculously good lineup that they have this year.

Clubplanet: How would you compare this year's WMC lineup to previous years for the Opium Group?

Carlos Correal: Bigger and better, more venues, more surprise acts and a much more diverse selection of music from techno, to house and from electro to mashup. It's going to be an amazing lineup this year!

Clubplanet: What are some of the things you wanted to change this year to better perfect the WMC experience for your audience?

Carlos Correal: This year we wanted to bring in some of the new blood including the Dirty Dutch which we have at our newest venue, Cameo. We also had issues with the Defected in the House opening party at SET last year, which a lot of people just couldn’t get into due to size capacity issues. Now we moved it to Cameo, which could hold almost 50% more capacity. Also bringing in some techno which is making huge waves this year so we have the Saved Party featuring Nic Fanciulli and Joris Voorn along with the SCI+TEC party with Dubfire both at SET on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Clubplanet: When putting together the lineups for the club, is there a particular sound that you wanted to associated with a particular club? For instance, Roger Sanchez at Mansion, Nic Fanciulli at SET.

Carlos Correal: Actually I wanted each venue to be very diversified, we brought some techno acts to SET since it was missing that edge last year and the sound system at SET is the perfect accompaniment for that sound. Mansion we kept very similar to last year’s unbelievably successful line up and just refined it a bit. Louis has always been home to the more electro/mash up sound so we kept that vibe and brought in Calvin Harris and Friends to take it to the top.

Clubplanet: What are you planning on doing this year at the club that will make the process easier at the door for the audience?

Carlos Correal: We have a great system for our customers to get in with no problems. Online ticket sales help our clients save by purchasing the tickets earlier and not having to deal with the long lines and increased door costs on the night of the events. We will have more staff to simplify the process of getting in and our number one goal this year is prove we are the best in hospitality by being helpful, friendly and treating everyone from the VIP to the GA customer with the same amount of respect they deserve. The customer’s great experiences is why have grown to such a great level of excellence globally.

Clubplanet: What do you predict will be the most popular shows this year for The Opium Group?

Carlos Correal: I’m personally excited about the Saved Records party with Nic Fanciulli and Joris Voorn, that’s going to be a surprise everyone will definitely love. Also the Steve Angello, Sebastian Ingrosso and Friends party should be as big and exciting as it was last year. But, the most exciting one that people shouldn’t miss is definitely going to be the Pryda party at SET. That should be pure insanity!

Clubplanet: As far as the logo for WMC for the Opium Group goes, how was that put together? Did you have a specific image in mind?

Carlos Correal: Every year we try to come up with something fun and interesting. This year’s Robot is something we knew people would remember and get a laugh about it. It’s cute, fun and shows we don’t take ourselves that seriously. We are in the business of nightlife and if you aren’t having fun in this industry… maybe it’s time to find something else to do.

Clubplanet: Have prices changed this year for your WMC shows?

Carlos Correal: We are still aware of the global economy issues we had last year so we have kept prices very close to the prices we did during last year’s WMC events. Especially with having so many events we want people to take advantage of as many events as possible and with prices introduced at a very low price for the pre sale, customers who buy their tickets now have a great opportunity to save big as opposed to paying door cover on the night of the events. We also are continuing our All-Access Passes which were a huge hit and gave people the opportunity to see all of the shows at discounted price.
