Clubplanet Interviews Damian Lazarus

To make it in electronic music, you really have to be innovative with your sound. We’ve interviewed many DJs recently who believe that there are too many copycats out there, guys who end up hurting the genre more than helping it. But then there are artists who really break the mold. We’re talking about DJ/Producers who aren’t afraid to walk the blurry line that is electronic dance music. One of these guys is Damian Lazarus, the man behind one of the most popular underground techno music labels on the globe, Crosstown Rebels. Lazarus isn’t afraid to experiment with his sound, but at the same time he knows how to properly work a crowd into a dancing frenzy. Clubplanet recently caught up with Damian Lazarus and chatted about his Crosstown Rebels Rebel Rave Tour, what he’s been working on and what he has planned for the remainder of the year.

ClubPlanet: How did 2009 treat you overall? Did you end the year on a good note?

Damian Lazarus: It’s was an interesting year actually. There were a lot of dramatic ups and downs throughout the year. But, musically on the whole it was a really good one for Crosstown Rebels and me personally, releasing my debut album and touring that. At the very end of the year I was in Japan and Australia and those were really really good trips.

CP: You’re currently on this massive Crosstown Rebels Rebel Rave Tour. How long did it take for you guys to realize this project?

Damian Lazarus: I started thinking about it back in September, maybe August. I started to think about how I wanted to kick off 2010. At the moment we’ve got a lot of really good things going. We’ve been making our music, and Rebel Rave TV has been doing really well. We wanted to do this as a way to celebrate what we’ve been doing as a label. We have such a good time when we play together, so I thought, “Maybe we should spend the first six months of 2010 all playing together and traveling around.” I changed my agent in the U.S. around November, so that was the new job that I gave my agent to look into. But yeah, it’s been a few good months in the planning. I’m very excited and I was actually looking at the tour dates and it’s coming along quite nicely.

CP: You’ll be in Miami this week playing Club Space. Did you decide that this time around you wanted to play the Terrace as opposed to the Techno Loft, which you played last time you were in town? How did that come about?

Damian Lazarus: We’ll actually be in both rooms. Space started getting into me a while ago and they asked me to play the Techno Loft back in November. I think it was a case of, “Let’s see how the night goes,” and then we can look at other options for 2010. The party was off the scale! So they came back and offered us the whole club (laughs). We’ve got Mr. C and Matt Tolfrey in the Techno Loft, and myself and Jamie (Jones) in the Terrace. At some point I think we’ll all come together.

CP: How do you like playing Miami outside of Winter Music Conference?

Damian Lazarus: I love it man. I’m excited about our party this year for Winter Music Conference as well. It’s going to be the fifth anniversary for "Get Lost" this year and also the last night of the U.S. leg of the Rebel Rave Tour. I’ve actually invited 18 artists to come play on that last Saturday. We’ll be kicking things off at 5 a.m. and playing through until 7 p.m. It’s going to be amazing!

CP: How would you describe your sound to someone who’s not familiar with the Crosstown Rebels label?

Damian Lazarus: “Ummmm…” I usually do a little stutter before I get started (laughs). The music is house and techno but I like to think that it’s from the heart and melodic. Slightly challenging but not off-putting. It’s a bit mysterious and odd, but definitely accessible for dance music.

CP: I recently heard "Diamond in the Dark," an ambitious tune that almost recalls the Flaming Lips. Where do you draw inspiration for a track like that from?

Damian Lazarus: Essentially years of going mental in parties, basically having bizarre out of body and out of mind experiences whilst on dance floors. But more specifically this track came to me when I was playing at DC10 a couple of years ago when I played the Circo Loco party. I had this idea of DJing and looking out across the people, and it’s dark in there but every so often there’s a spotlight that shines down on the crowd. And I just had this idea of instead of being a DJ, being a crooning type of Neil Diamond-esque singer performing from the DJ booth and seeing this light descend on one person in particular whose eyes I catch across the room and I try and have some sort of direct conversation with this person in my mind. So I guess that’s the basis for that song (laughs).

CP: Lately what have you been listening to outside of electronic dance music?

Damian Lazarus: Oh tons of stuff. Recently I’ve been listening to the new Sufjan Steven album, I’ve also been listening to The XX quite a bit. So much really, quite a lot of music. At home I’ll listen to anything from Glass Candy to Bath.

CP: What are you plan for the remainder of the year?

Damian Lazarus: As far as right now I can only see as far as the Rebel Rave Tour. After the U.S. leg of the tour we start in Europe. That is probably going to run until the end of June, and then I’ll probably be going to South America. After that I’ll try and work on some new material, but I don’t expect to release a great deal of material this year. Maybe they’ll be an interesting CD release from me toward the later end of this year.
