Top Club Pop Songs of 2009

It’s extremely hard—or at least fastidious—to narrow down music and to separate the best from the rest. Taking into account the many millions of music listeners out there, coupled with their own personal tastes, selecting the best pop songs released is really a personal opinion that someone’s bound to disagree with decisively.

When you venture into the club arena and look at the culture and the genre of music put out, it’s about more than a catchy beat and some lyrics that would make the ghost of Hemingway scream out, “That kid can rhyme.” In fact, club songs are a complete paradox. They need both of these things—beats and rhymes—at times, but at others could do well without either. The one deciding factor that makes a club song stand out can be told in one word: electric.

The best club songs out there are simply magic and cannot be produced regularly. People intentionally trying to create this brand of magic will fail drastically. The best music is usually a beautiful mistake – a song the artist likes and hopes will do well, but really has no clue how it will be taken in a club atmosphere.

Breaking it down into a list of 10, here are the best club pop songs of 2009, in no particular order.

1: "Empire State of Mind" by Jay-Z Featuring Alicia Keys

Although this jam is fairly new, it has quickly become one of the most-played and most-danced to songs of the year. Jay-Z has been considered one of the best hip hop artists since he dropped his debut album, Reasonable Doubt, in the 1990s, and Alicia Keys is one mega pop star to be reckoned with. The two make for a dynamic duo, and this track gets the party started like no other.

2: "Poker Face" by Lady Gaga

There are really words to describe Lady Gaga other than “wow.” While the beat of Poker Face is loud, vibrant and electronic enough that even pure techno DJs will spin it, the lyrics are dark and unapologetic and appealing to a more progressive, anything-goes culture of debauchery in the making. Needless to say, this song was one of the hottest of 09.

3: "Single Ladies" by Beyoncé

This won’t be the last time we see Beyoncé on the countdown here. But the future is then and the present is now. Single Ladies was an ode to club-going girls everywhere, empowering them to wreck the floor while the men drooled quietly in the corner. And to date, this has been Beyoncé’s calling card since still with Destiny’s Child. Both guys and girls groove to this tune, and the club types cannot get enough of it.

4: "She Wolf" by Shakira

Shakira is another hard artist to correctly put into words. With her Colombian yodel and her super-model—with a little more junk in the trunk—looks, one might think she’s the latest attempt by a bubble gum production company to sell records based on sex appeal. Well, that is until you actually listen to a Shakira song. She brings a passionate style to the table that forces you to get up and move. No song displays this better than She Wolf.

5: "Obsessed" by Mariah Carey

Mariah and her high-c might not tear the roof off with this powerful anthem dealing with obsessive men, but she does manage to prove that her pop appeal is far from dead. Mariah was huge in the mid 90s with her subtle sex appeal, and then gargantuan in the late 90s when she went scantily clad. Now that she’s back in the limelight, she’s bigger than ever – and Obsessed kept the club fired up for the better part of 09.

6: "Sweet Dreams" by Beyoncé

Truthfully, Beyoncé could be on this list for any one of about a dozen songs that she’s dropped recently. She’s just seriously that popular. It’s hard work trying to figure out which one of her tunes jams best in the club. Sweet Dreams does the trick after a balls-to-the-wall anthem goes off and people are ready to groove instead of throwing their fists at the ceiling.

7: "I Gotta Feeling" by The Black Eyed Peas

Will.I.Am, Fergie and the rest of the BEP superstars are another group that seemingly cannot fail when releasing a single. Their base is so broad that, even should the song fail to live up to the last, it’s still embraced by millions. I Gotta Feeling was one of the quintessential pop club jams of the year and deserves placement on any list.

8: "Use Somebody" by Kings of Leon

It’s rare that you’ll find a non-pure pop or non-hip hop act on a list of the best club songs, but Kings of Leon are a great band that manages to turn out some legitimate club fodder. Use Somebody is a gritty, passionate anthem that really gets the juices flowing when the lights go off. It has just enough of that 8th-grade-dance feel to make it crazy nostalgic, yet keeps enough rock cred to avoid the “cheesy” label.

9: "Celebrate" by Madonna

Although her fan base has dwindled these days to females and guys who won’t go home with one after the club closes, Madonna still puts out some incredibly fresh music that was born for the club scene. Madge could write a tune about fixing cars, eating chicken or even playing at an online best bonus casino and she’d still strike gold. Celebrate was a great addition to the club atmosphere in '09.

10: "So What" by Pink

Pink could have made the list with a few songs. She’ll come in last due to other female pop artists—like Britney and Christina and even Kelly Clarkson—who were also respectively popular in the clubs this past year. Pink’s entire album was hot, but So What really brought the raw energy that people look for when out partying.
