What Labor Day Weekend Means to the Night Owls

As usual, the end of summer is here too soon. Labor Day snuck up on us again! Some are starting a new school year or heading off to college, others just need an end-of-summer break from their daily nine to five grind. This is the last three-day weekend of summer to kick back and relax in good company. Traditionally, Labor Day Weekend is the symbolic end of summer. For some of us, Labor Day Weekend is the last celebratory weekend where we do absolutely nothing in observation of the holiday. But how did this holiday even come about? And what are we really supposed to be celebrating? Well, I’ll tell you.

This American holiday, which actually originated in Canada, has been recognized on the first Monday of September since 1882. In the beginning it was just a day off work for the working man that had been laboring hard for 12 hours a day, seven days a week. It became official after a group of workers took an unpaid day off work to march from City Hall down to Union Square in protest of their working conditions and to demand a better quality of life.

The way we celebrate this federal holiday has changed drastically since its inception. In the old days, it was customary to participate in parades or listen to political speeches. Nowadays people mostly just enjoy one of the last warm days before fall comes and they need to start layering up. They have picnics, barbecues, watch fireworks or just watch the beginning of football season with a nice cold one on their couch. After all, it is supposed to be a national day of rest from any type of “labor” no matter how undemanding it may be.

But when it comes to us night owls, all we want to do with our weekend is juice it for all its worth and party nonstop until the sun comes up. Most top nightclubs in major markets will for sure have music lineups you won’t want to miss followed by unforgettable parties. Promoters in every city have been pushing their parties in these past weeks so there are plenty of opportunities to unwind from the office stress. Cities close to any body of water usually have water activities taking place all day and into the night. Get your freak under the sun, but make sure to alternate quenching your thirst with some water as well as with huge amounts of liquor.

Nine to fivers take notice it’ll be a while until the next three-day weekend, so take advantage of any reason to get out of your routine and live it up in the present! The summer party season maybe be over, but that just means that the fall party season is about to start.
