Urban Retreat: Water Taxi Beach NYC

Urban Retreat: Water Taxi Beach NYC

Water Taxi Beach, though assembled artificially, is an authentic New York City summer must do. Now, with three locations to choose from, its newest taking refuge on Governors Island, variety can be the spice of your life.

Long Island City

The original of the Water Taxi Beaches, Long Island City is just a 4-minute Water Taxi ride from midtown Manhattan, but you will feel as if you are miles away from the hustle and bustle of the concrete jungle.  Though the ‘beach’ doesn’t allow swimming, (not that you’d want to dive into the East River, anyways) there are sprinklers that intermittently cool the beach. The rays of sun are plentiful, as well as the various live music acts and DJ’s that perform weekly. This summertime venue turns 21+, after dark, so don’t forget to bring your ID. Water Taxi Beach Long Island City hosts some of the hottest, late-night dance parties and is available for private parties, weddings and corporate events.

South Street Seaport

Located on the north side of Pier 17, this man-made beach offers some of the most spectacular views of the Brooklyn Bridge and the East River from the city. A great place to grab a drink and a bit of sun any time of day, Water Taxi Beach South Street Seaport also offers ping pong, skee-ball and a 9-hole miniature golf course. Water Taxi Beach South Street Seaport becomes a playground for the above 21 crowd after the sun sets and features rotating DJs all week long. This edge-of-the-island hotspot is sure to be packed to the gills on the weekend so, for a more relaxed breath of fresh, East River air, take an afternoon away from the office and head to the South Street Seaport.

Governors Island

The beach at Governors Island, Water Taxi’s newest, sandy digs, boasts over 20,000 square feet of shoreline dust. This venue doubles as an outdoor concert hotspot, quite literally, in fact, and is sponsored by the Highline Ballroom, NY Water Taxi and Liberty Even Management. A spectacular line-up will hit Governors Island each summer, and the crowd isn’t bad looking, either. From this out-of-the-city locale, the views of downtown Manhattan and the Brooklyn Bridge enchant. Not your cup of vodka-spiked, iced tea? Pack your towel and let the rays do the enchanting. Beach volleyball and basketball courts are available, as well as tasty treats and liquid libations.
