Global Frequencies: Summer Clubbin’ Have Me A Splash

Global Frequencies: Summer Clubbin’ Have Me A Splash

It’s here. Summer that is, and that means it’s time to step on board a different kind of dance floor. As the quasi-official start of summer, this Memorial Day weekend will christen the DJ sailing season with Global Frequencies kicking off its boat party series (the first of its kind in NYC) of six events sprinkled through late September.

“There’s only a handful of worthy venues here in New York City,” says Global’s David Choi. “And we felt the dance music community was yearning for something different.”

Coming off two successfully produced and executed boat parties last summer, Choi says the move to do a whole series was a natural progression for Global. And they plan to up the ante in ’08 with new line-ups and styles throughout the season, plus a special perk from NYC: 120-foot free standing waterfalls designed by Danish–Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson in the East River, cascading beneath the Brooklyn Bridge.

The first of the set, taking off Saturday, will feature John Creamer and Stephane K, with Eric Harary opening on the 430-capacity Star of Palm Boat. And, like all the parties, it boards at Pier 40, starting at 5:30pm. Tickets are $25 and include an hour-long Barcardi-sponsored open bar. (Prices will range throughout the series depending on artists and event type.)

Though half the line-ups have not been officially announced, we can tell you that the party following the opener will include Luke Fair and James Talk with Thomas Pategas opening on June 15, and August 2 will feature SOS (Desyn Masiello, Omid 16B and Demi). For the remaining dates – July 6, August 31 and September 21 – we’ve heard an array of unofficial chatter from all-female line-ups to charity and industry-focused events, with names dropped like LCD Soundsystem, Lee Burridge, DJ Rap, Miss Nine, Heidi and Magda, in addition to the ambiguity of the heavy-hitting Vital Talent roster, which includes John Digweed and Sander Kleinenberg among many, many others.

In addition to the inaugural party’s Star of Palm Beach boat, the series will include the 525-capacity Queen of Hearts, which is set up with three levels, with sound systems and separate booths on the top (“heaven”) level and the bottom (“hell”) level, leaving the mid level for a bar and lounge area.

“There is one caveat to having the Queen of Hearts,” says Choi, “if there are too many people up top and not enough people downstairs there’s a chance that the boat will get too top heavy. We get around that by having solid, solid music downstairs and upstairs…so no one’s clamoring to try to go into one space.”

Both booths will have a mix of electronic flavors, but the entire boat will blast dance music, as opposed to shoving another genre on the lower level. “The people who come out to our events are very musically inclined,” Choi says, “Real hardcore electronic music fans [who] don’t like to go out and listen to hip-hop. So, if they get stuck downstairs the music is still good.”

As far as the actual experience Choi promises it will be magic. “For the first half, the sun is starting to set, people have their favorite cocktail in hand, and there’s warm summer breezes cutting through the boat. It gets into this awesome vibe—really chilled and relaxed,” he says. “And then the sun goes down, we watch it set, and then—we spend quite a bit of money on lighting as well—the boat turns into a nightclub. So it’s another twist on the whole dance music experience.”
