Above and Beyond Interview

Above and Beyond Interview

It’s here. The week that everyone’s been waiting for.  Long lines at all hours of the day crowd the entranceways of Miami’s nightlife venues while Europe invades Miami for the musical bedlam that is Winter Music Conference. Not only are music heads getting ready to see some of their preferred DJs, but the performers themselves are preparing for their events, as well as becoming fans themselves and joining in on the fun.  One of the many big name acts visiting the city is trance trio Above and Beyond. The guys are currently on a world tour that has them in Glasglow just days before their WMC event. Our CP Miami and Cooljunkie editor recently caught up with Above and Beyond’s Tony McGuiness to get the low down on what the band’s been up to and what their plans are during and after conference.

CP: So what’s up guys?  How’s everything been going for you this year? I see you guys are on tour at the moment.

Tony McGuiness: We're constantly on tour! So much so we took three weeks out in January to help finish the OceanLab album. It was nice to get away (we went to Ibiza) and we certainly broke the back of it, but we're still tinkering.

CP: You guys seem to have a short stint in the states as far as touring goes for now. What are some of best cities to play? Where does your music get the most response?

TONY MCGUINESS: The USA remains one of our most toured countries. We like playing there and we like the people. After Miami we're doing our first bus tour down the West coast in June - really looking forward to that. At a pinch LA is probably the place where we get the most intense response - EDC was amazing last year, 30,000 people under the moon singing Alone Tonight - amazing.

CP: What do you guys think of the music scene here in Miami, versus other cities that you guys have played?

TONY MCGUINESS: We're only there for a week when the whole dance world descends on the city, so it is hard to get a feeling for what it is like normally. Judging from the kind of music that's blaring out of the cars cruising on Collins it feels like a Hip Hop and R&B town on the surface, but it would be nice to come back at a different time of year to see what's happening underneath.

CP: You guys have quite the list of remixes. Are there any artists out there that you guys would love to work with or remix?  I’m talking mainstream radio.

TONY MCGUINESS: I'd like to work with Radiohead or Muse, something epic and sad from a different world to us.

CP: I’ve noticed that you guys have a few free days after your event at Nocturnal for WMC. Do you guys plan to stay for in Miami for a few days?

TONY MCGUINESS: Actually we're off to Ecuador on Friday, and that is the day after our Nocturnal event on the 27th so sadly not.

CP: What events are you looking forward to at Conference other than yours?

TONY MCGUINESS: To be honest with you I haven't had a look at who else is on - we'll play it by ear when we get there. Maybe I'll have a read through some mags on the plane.

CP: Sometimes Conference can get a little crazy and you just have to get away from a for a bit.  Where do you guys like to un-wind during conference?

TONY MCGUINESS: The best spot to get away from it, possibly in the whole world, is inside one of the curtained sofas in the mad, mad Delano Hotel garden with the stars above you. Heaven.

CP: Are there any particular spots where you guys like to grab a bite?

TONY MCGUINESS: Any one of the restaurants along Ocean Drive will hit the spot, the entire world struts by your table.

CP: Any last words for your fans on Clubplanet?

TONY MCGUINESS: Come and check out the Anjunabeats 100th release party at Nocturnal on the 27th. Alongside Above & Beyond you can catch Andy Moor, Super8 & Tab and Mike Shiver and, in the Anjunadeep room, Boomjinx, Fine Taste, James Grant and Electrobios. Should be fun!
