Healthy Cocktails and Bars in NYC

Cold and flu season is well under way, and while the bar isn’t the first place you’d think to visit in order to build your immune system, a number of them do offer antioxidant-rich and vitamin-packed cocktails created with fresh ingredients, such as whole fruits or fruit and vegetable juices, that are a healthier alternative to your standby scotch on the rocks. Though we doubt these libations will actually help you stave off a cold (no, drinking alcohol does not kill germs), we can’t resist the attempt to rationalize tippling from time to time as a beneficiary activity. So drink to your health at one of these bars whose “healthy” cocktails help atone for alcohol’s sins by making you feel good, if only for a night.

Milk & Honey
134 Eldridge Street
This notoriously exclusive lounge (entrance is by referral and appointment only) may be known for its many rules—no loitering outside the door, no name dropping—but one hard and fast tenet ensures that the juice or extract in your drink came by the hands of the barkeep and not from a bottle or can. Oranges, lemons, limes and apples are squeezed by hand daily, so drinks taste fresher while also retaining some nutritional value. A spoon full of sugar helps the medicine go down, and the Penicillin Scotch (peated scotch, lemon, honey, ginger) certainly fits the bill—ginger is known to quell upset stomachs while honey and lemon only sweeten the deal.

Employees Only
510 Hudson Street

Masterfully crafted cocktails are a focus at this prohibition-era bar fronted by a tarot card reader. Health and good fortune are yours for the taking in the effervescent Fraise Sauvage (Plymouth gin, wild strawberries, Tahitian vanilla, fresh lemon juice, and Mumm Joyesse Demi-Sec champagne) and the Ginger Smash (muddled ginger root and fresh cranberries shaken with Beefeater Wet and Berentzen apple liqueur) since adding alcohol to strawberries and cranberries increases their antioxidant capacity. Lavender has been long heralded as a headache remedy and when combined with other herbs, like in the Provençale (lavender-infused Plymouth gin stirred with herbs de provence-infused vermouth and cointreau), it creates a tonic that strengthens the nervous system.

Counter
105 First Avenue

The homemade vodka at this organic wine and martini bar is infused with herbs cultivated on the Lower East Side space’s own rooftop garden and pervades cocktails, like the Dirtiest Martini, a basil-infused vodka topped with olive juice, and the R-Rated Rootbeer Float, made with wintergreen and vanilla-infused vodka. The latter contains sarsaparilla, and it’s a good thing, since this herb root combats two likely side effects of having one too many: liver disease and syphilis.

Sushi Samba
245 Park Avenue South, 212-475-9377
87 Seventh Avenue, 212-691-7885

The house specialty Samba Juice at this Latin-Japanese fusion chain contains the Brazilian açaí berry, a super-grape known for packing more antioxidants than blueberries or cranberries. Natural stimulant guarana provides nighttime fuel while passionfruit purée is thought to inhibit cancer cell growth and also serve as a good source of fiber. The Nina Fresa and Lemon Samurai are both made with guava juice, which also has high levels of antioxidants and lowers cholesterol, and muddled fruits such as lemon, strawberry, peach and lime.

Django
480 Lexington Avenue
212-871-6600

This French-Mediterranean resto recently went on a health kick when it introduced its Vitamin Dj, mixed with freshly juiced organic carrots (carotene for eyesight), Granny Smith apple juice (phytonutrients that protect the heart), elderflower liqueur (enhances immunity) and vodka (er, leaves you with a hangover). Not in the mood for adulterated V8? Try the Djangito, which pairs Stoli Ohranj with antioxidant- and vitamin C-heavy yuzu juice, made from a Japanese fruit that tastes like grapefruit muddled with Mandarin orange.
