Mynt Condition

With MYNT’s fusion of early 90’s synth-pop meets dancey alterna-rock, the group’s sound is almost as eclectic as their line-up. Created by producers Albert Castillo and Rich “DJ Riddler” Pangilinan, MYNT has used the vocal stylings of Marisol Angelique, Kim Sozzi, and even American Idol finalist Joe Murena. The group’s first single “How Did You Know” quickly climbed the charts and became the #1 most played record on New York’s WKTU 103.5 FM. Since then, MYNT’s newly recorded full-length album, “Still Not Sorry” has hit a personal note with the group. The empowering, no-holds-barred lyrics seem all too appropriate for the recent departure of singer Kim Sozzi. But despite all the drama, MYNT won’t be slowing down anytime soon.

How did you guys initially hook up with Kim?

Rich: We had been friends for a really long time, and had been wanting to work together for a long time. We recorded half the album and were looking to write new songs with a new songwriter.

How did the drama start with Kim?

Rich: From the get go, we made it clear it would be a group collaboration. We performed together as a group, and we performed at Beatstock last year together. Kim decided she didn’t want to be part of a group. It put us in a weird situation. We brought in Marisol and Kim changed her mind again. We thought everything was OK, and then 3 weeks before the album came out, she said she didn’t want to do it again.

Some of the songs from your album Still Not Sorry get pretty personal. Are any of them about Kim?

Rich: (Laughs) It’s funny you should say that. No, those were written a lot earlier. They just ironically fit the situation.

So where is she now?

Rich: She’s still doing shows, she’s still involved in music. The group thing was not intended for her.

Are you guys still friends?

Rich: I still communicate with her. In this business, you can’t take things too personally. She does her own thing, and we do ours. Mynt-1.jpg

Rich, you’ve worked with the likes of Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson, and Mary J. Blige. Have you experienced this type of situation before?

Rich: Producers and artists fight all the time. Everyone has their own opinion. This is the first time it happened to me personally. It definitely worked out for us in the end though.

Do you think you’ll ever work with her again?

Marisol: I haven’t really had as much experience with her as Rich has, but I think we’ve all moved on. Rich: We can never say never. If the situation is right, who knows.

What are some of your favorite clubs?

Rich: I like Mirage. The crowd is really up close on you and the club is beautiful. Belvidere is really nice too. And Pacha- they did a really good job renovating the place. The vibe is totally different. It’s unique.

Who are some of your favorite acts that you’ve toured with?

Rich: Raina or Lukas Prada. We played with them at Beatstock. We’ve played with Information Society too, one of our big influences.

What are you guys working on right now?

Marisol: We’re working on another song- it’s a throwback with a modern twist. We’re thinking about adding it to this album [Still Not Sorry]. We’re possibly adding a ballad too.

Any upcoming shows we should know about?

Rich: We’re playing at the NBA All-Star game in Houston in February. Marisol: I got my start in music singing the national anthem there.

So you’re getting back to your roots, huh?

Marisol: (Laughs) Yeah.

Is singing something you’ve always wanted to do?

Marisol: Yes, I sing and used to be a professional dancer. Putting them both together is great. Every show is a new experience for me.

Do you have any advice for aspiring singers?

Marisol: I’ve been trying to do this since I was 17 or 18. You just can’t give up. You never know who you’ll meet next that can help you out in your career. It’s really part luck and part talent in this business.

Rich: Yeah, opportunities are always around. The doors are always there, you just have to have the confidence and courage to walk through them. There’s no written formula for success. You just have to take chances and not be afraid to fail.
