A roundup of great house, electro, progressive, hardstyle and vocal dance tracks.
GoodLuck - I’ve Been Thinking About You - [ULTRA]
A sure sign that summer’s coming is the beginning of the war of dancepop covers. In recent years, “Missing,” “Fast Car,” and “Show Me Love” were all over the radio due to various cover versions. South African collective GoodLuck get the ball rolling with a pretty and inspired update of Londonbeat’s '90s pop hit “I’ve Been Thinking About You.” The emo-pop vocal performance by Jules Harding is a unique gender and energy flip, focussing on subtlety and flow rather than the punch of the original. The trop-pop rhythms are tailor made for radio, while the clubs will be playing the amped-up mix by Girls Love DJs & Boris Smith. Watching the video, it’s quite refreshing to see the vocalist featured, although I wonder how many goldfish were harmed during the filming.
Milk & Sugar - Music is Moving (Nora en Pure) - [ENORMOUS TUNES]
Moving from covers of '90s pop songs to '90s dance records, German duo Milk & Sugar re-envisions Fargetta’s Italodance classic as a straight up house record. No stranger to covers (“Let the Sunshine,” “Love is in the Air”), the choice to update it in the current flashback to '90s house style is kind of brilliant, if not meta. Of particular interest is the gorgeous beach-vibed take by Nora en Pure, who manages to smooth out the grooves while keeping the funky energy flowing.
Starx and Vlammen - Fireblood - [HARSH]
There’s nothing like a 150bpm hardstyle track to jolt you awake in the morning. Actually, I’ve been using Fireblood as my morning alarm and it works quite well. Imagine DVBBS’ “Tsunami” on crack with some gothic and religious overtones for an idea. Aggressive right out of the gate, the beat does kinda slow down during a drop, but as soon as the glitchy offbeat effects hit, you will be startled back to life. For those who like their music on the harder side, “Fireblood’ is a free download on Soundcloud.
Laidback Luke & Made in June ft Bright Lights - Paradise - [DIM MAK]
In addition to winning 6 medals at last months Kung Fu World championships, Laidback Luke has also been busy in the studio working on new music. The summer ready beats of “Paradise” are a FRESH sounding mix of future house and trop house. The word fresh is emphasized because the hybrid sound brings elements of both genres together without any of the cliches. The marimbas are a nice touch also. Bright Lights sound incredible as always and makes us even more anxious to escape this horrible weather and float away to a summer “Paradise.”
AmtraC - Accessorize - [OPENERS]
Those of you sick of commercial dance-pop should “Accessorize” immediately. The eight-minute track takes you on a journey through experimental progressive house. It’s not lo-fi per se, but offbeat and dissonant elements shake up the normal 4/4 beat structure in a startling yet soothing way. Just when you are lulled into a zone, Amtrac pulls something else out of the kitchen sink to take your journey into another direction. “Accessorize” is not going to be a major dancefloor filler, but those who enjoy the weirder and deeper sounds will be all over this.
Tritonal - Hey Mamama - [ENHANCED]
In our wrap-up of big songs from Miami last week, there was one we left out because we couldn’t find a sample online. Tritonal continues to surprise with each new track as they continue to completely change their sound. “Hey Mamama” features the vocals from Dream Academy’s “Life in a Northern Town,” with a similar vibe to Dario G’s “Sunchyme.” In this difficult political climate, a lovely uplifting track like this is the perfect escape. Judging by the reactions we heard at just about every pool party, “Hey Mamama” is going to be a major track for the summer.
