SUNDAY FUNDAY: Tyler Glenn - Shameless
It’s #sundayfunday but we’re going to get a little deep today, like we’re in Church. Tyler Glenn was the lead singer and keyboardist for alternative rock band Neon Trees who are best known for their hits “Animal” and “Everybody Talks.” Considering their Mormon background and reputation for not drinking or doing drugs, their lyrics were full of references to both. Even their love long with fellow Mormon Kaskade could be interpreted as the start of a drug addiction. Fast forward a few years, and the openly queer Tyler has gone solo and released two dark, rebellious, and aggressive songs that deal with his personal struggles. The electropop-flavored rock tracks “Trash” and “Shameless” seem to tell about his journey away from his religion but can also be interpreted as trying to accept his sexuality. Yeah, I said this was going to be pretty deep. But just like the classic house anthems wailed by gospel singers taking us to Church on the dance floors, Tyler’s stories have that same spiritual catharsis. For club consumption, both songs have on point remixes with "Trash" getting a modern synth-pop rerub by Danny Verde and "Shameless" being turned out by both Dirty Disco (with a hint of electro) and Alyson Calagna (with a brilliant take on modern tribal (hints of classic sounds updated for the festival kids of today).) If you are looking for a release and don’t want to go to church for #SundayFunday - add “Shameless” to your playlist when it drops on October 7th.
