A roundup of great house, electro, indie dance, deep house, electro pop and progressive tracks.

Bingo Players - Be With You - [INSOMNIAC]

After a few remixes of previous hits (“Tom’s Diner” and “Cry”), the Bingo Players return with something a little different.  “Be With You” is a lot funkier and groovier than you would expect from the Dutch DJ/producer.  It’s not a track that will “rattle” you, it is more of a modern, updated slice of two-step garage with a bit of a melodic pop feel.  It is actually quite a refreshing take of the '90s meme, with a unique hybrid sound.  The vocals are strong yet playful, making it the oddly romantic peak of a midtempo house set.  Definitely not a festival banger, “Be With You” is a perfect song to send to the one you love.

Vassy - Nothing to Lose [MUSICAL FREEDOM]

Arguably the biggest buzz record of Ultra Music Festival when Vassy performed it live during Tiesto’s set, “Nothing to Lose” is finally released this week.  There are a few things that make this record quite special.   The focus is on Vassy’s lyrics and voice.  A simple song about her place in life, the every-person who attacks life without fear.  This is the anti-pop song as she isn’t pretending to be bougie or flossy, just sharing lyrics that we can all relate to. The production isn’t overdone with the groovy electro track acting as the backing for her voice which is quite the opposite for most club tracks.  The beats are solid and this will work for festival and club sets, yet it also has that commercial feel that will make it perfect for radio.  Probably the biggest highlight is that we get to hear Vassy sing, rather than be effected to the point of being unrecognizable. Maybe this is why she finally gets to have her name as the sole solo artist rather than a featured voice - which is something she truly deserves!

Cole Plante ft Bobi - Teardrops - [HOLLYWOOD]
Dawn Tallman - Teardrops - [SLAAG]

It’s always interesting when a song gets covered by two artists at the same time, especially in such divergent styles.  Soulful dance classic “Teardrops,” by Womack & Womack, is actually quite a sad song with the line “And the music don't feel like it did when I felt it with you,” resonating with many updates over the years, most notably by Lovestation and Elton John (with both Lulu and k.d. lang).  Rising DJ/producer Cole Plante melds elements of trop house and electro for a very summery 2016 feel.  Enlisting Aussie newcomer BOBI was a very wise move, as his powerful voice with the insane range is one you will be hearing a lot more of. With a similarly powerful voice, the queen of Gospel energy Dawn Tallman teams with producer Eric Kupper for a seductively soulful rework.   Her followup to the incredible “Feel the Vibe,” is just as moving and memorable.  Choosing a favorite version between the two is like trying to choose wine with a meal: no matter the flavor, it will compliment your mp3 player perfectly.

Armand van Helden - Wings - [SPINNIN]

Choosing a title for a track is usually pretty random, but normally when there are vocals, that leads to something kind of obvious.  No stranger to sampling, Armand van Helden grabs the vocal title hook of the PhD eighties hit “I Won’t Let You Down” and lays it over a lo-fi house beat and some catchy synth chords.  That it sounds like something from the '90s come as no surprise, it actually sounds like it could’ve been on his "2 Future 4 U” or “Ghettoblaster” albums. That’s not a dis of course, it is is catchy as hell and will no doubt be making it into the sets of DJs around the world.  Though where he got the title “Wings” from is a sheer mystery.

Danny Dove - Break Up the Dam - [PINKSTAR]

Here’s one of those head scratcher records.  What the hell is it?  Mixing cowbells, '70s prog guitars, and broken beats with sampled mutterings over deep tech-house beats is quite odd.  Even stranger is that this is coming from Danny Dove, who is normally more on the commercial tip.  Though if you go back and listen to “Kill Me” from earlier this year, you will hear Dove’s darker side.  It’s hard to imagine this being a massive club smash yet there is something kind of brilliant in the shear madness and creativity contained within.
