It just isn’t a trip to Winter Music Conference without a Firebeatz interview. The prolific duo of merry jokesters Tim Smulders and Jurre van Doeselaar unleashed a massive new track just about every month last year- including the club smashes Ghostchild, Sky High, and Tornado. Kicking off 2016 with the one-two punch of “Dat Disco Swindle” and “Lullaby,” you can see that they are tweaking their sound while keeping their trademark energy level on high. Is it any wonder why Calvin Harris contacted them to do a track on his album?
RS: How you doing guys?
Tim: I’m great thank you, how are you?
RS: I am doing great. I heard your party last night was sickening.
Tim: Yeah it was dope, we had a party at FDR Delano and it was a big night for us because we came out with a new song with Chocolate Puma. We did a total rebranding, new logo, new visuals, new everything so Firebeatz is back at it again.
RS: So what is the new song with Chocolate Puma called?
Jurre: It’s called “Lullaby,” it has featured vocals by Bishop. I really love the vocals on the track, it is really one of those festival, emotional breakdowns and then the drop has a lot of energy.
RS: He is crying already. I have to tell you that the big question that everyone is wondering is as an artist signed to Spinnin’ Records which ‘90s song are you going to cover?
Tim: You’ll have to ask Jorn Heringa this because he has all the knowledge on ‘90s and ‘80s records. In a couple years we will be doing ‘60s record I think, whatever hits.
RS: If you guys were racing cars what model and what brand would it be?
Jurre: Ferrari, although McLaren is winning with Renault engines.
RS: I love the video for “Dat Disco Swindle” and with the way that you guys are mixing disco house and electro and future beats, do you see your music going more into that direction?
Jurre: Yeah well actually it’s going into a lot of directions and more song wise, so more vocals and more groove. Not just bangers, we have always made some groovy tunes in between just because we like to make everything, but I think that it will change to a bit more of those kind of songs and fewer bangers.
RS: Schella was on that record right?
Jurre: Yeah, he is a great dancer and he was in the video as well.
RS: I did not see that; I’ll have to check that out. Congrats on getting the gold record for “Dear New York,” was that your first gold record?
Tim: That was the first one, yup.
RS: Did you get one or two plaques?
Tim: We got three.
RS: So you each have one in your apartment?
RS: Oh congratulations.
Jurre: That was a great moment.
RS: Going back in time, who actually sang on the song “Home”?
Tim: It’s a little secret.
Jurre: It sounds like a woman but it is a man pitched up.
Tim: It’s not a transvestite.
RS: Oh it’s not a transvestite, that is good to know! Was it Alex Newell? That is the closest thing in the U.S. because he sings like a chick. I know you guys are big fans of Tiesto, what was it like to have him edit “Sky High”?
Tim: We were honored that someone that big worked with us and wanted to take it to his own show.
Jurre: He premiered it at Ultra’s closing set with him onstage. It also shows what kind of legend he is that he gave us that platform.
RS: Speaking about modern legends, did you actually get to go into the studio with Calvin Harris to work on “It Was You?”
Tim: No, we did it over the internet but he was really funny cause he emailed us for the track. we were basically sending him songs every other week or so. He emailed us something like I love you guys and him being shit at making drops and asked if we could build a drop for him and asked if we wanted to do a collab for his album. It was crazy.
RS: That is awesome. We now know what a tornado sounds like, if you were to do a track called hurricane what would it sound like and who ?
Tim: Like a hurricane, it would sound like wind and I would collaborate with Prodigy or Dre Hazes. You should check him out, he is a Dutch guy and he is the bomb.
RS: Is he someone that we should watch for as a new producer?
Tim: Yes, for sure. He is a great singer too and his father is a legend.
RS: Who is his father?
Tim: Andre Hazes. Do you know the song “The Kite”/”De Vlieger”? It is amazing and it is the kind of song that you get a lump in your throat.
RS: You guys are both kind of fashion plates, where do y’all go shopping for your clothes?
Jurre: Zamon, they have a lot of good stores in the Netherlands.
Tim: I buy my stuff at Farfetch and Max Fashion which is online and in Miami we shop at Unknown which is a very nice shop and at Barneys and Websters.
RS: Cool. When they do the movie about your life, which actor will play each of you?
Jurre: He will play me and I will play him.
Tim: I think that I will be played by Matt Damon.
Jurre: And I will be played by Jim Carrey or Will Ferrell.
RS: What is the strangest question that you have ever been asked in an interview?
Tim: The one you just asked!
RS: You have the new song with Chocolate Puma, what else do you have coming out next?
Tim: We are giving away some free tracks this week so keep an eye out on social media.
RS: What about Hives? Is it on hives?
Jurre: Yes, we even have a feature on Myspace!
RS: What would you like to say to all of your fans out there?
Jurre: We love you. Our fans are the best and they make it possible for us to travel the world.
Tim: Thank you guys, you make it possible for us to go out and do our thing. We love you, thank you!
