Music for the Masses

A roundup of great electro, indie dance,  chill, deep house, trance, drum & bass and progressive tracks.

Oliver Jay - Do It Till The Sunrise - [Exit 32]

“Put your hands in the air if you love life.” Simple and direct and to the point, that is the main vocal sample of the chugging new deep house track by Oliver Jay.  Deep house is a term that's been overused to the point of losing its meaning, but this track is a good reference point.  It goes back to the roots of deep house, merging Chicago house and Detroit techno.  Bringing the two sounds together, it is a modern hybrid of deep and tech house.   The pristine production illustrates that you can have an infectious jam without being polluted by the trendy trickery of the moment.  Click through his Soundcloud and check out “It’s Good,” another track that verifies its title.

Beauty & The Geek vs Ron Reeser "Middle of Nowhere" - [UPSCALE]

It’s a  month later and I am still hunting down songs I heard while in Miami.  There’s this vocal track that I swore was Wynter Gordon singing “Take Me Out of Here.”   Ends up it’s actually by brother/sister duo Beauty & the Geek and called “Middle of Nowhere.”   Produced by Ron Reeser, this escapist pop house song about love is the kind of frothy pop that is as fun to dance to in the club as it is to sing along with on the radio.  Remixes by Benny Camaro, Jecque & Connell, and Quiet Disorder toughen it up a bit for big room floors, but I think I will stick with the hands in the air original.  Watch out for Ron’s new track “Voice” which is cool mashup of Otto Knows and Swedish House Mafia in the piano house idiom.  That may sound odd, but it works quite well.

Deeplomatik - I Wanna Dance - [SALTED]

Poland is the last place you might think to look for quality underground house, then again that’s where Wawa and Bojan are from.  Producer Seb Skalski, under the brilliant pseudonym Deeplomak, releases brilliant deep jams that will make you want to “get it in” as the children say.  The vocalist has a bluesy gospel rasp extolling the desire to leave the problems of the world behind and dance over the shuffling house beat.  The dub adds a sexy horn line, while Dave Meyer's dub transports you back to the basements of the '90s.  While you await this track's release coming sometime next month, enjoy Deeplomatik's funky Space Drop EP.

Swanky Tunes & Far East Movement - Entertain Us - [Dim Mak]

With so much soundalike music out there right now, the only way to “Entertain Us” is to do something different.  Swanky Tunes and Far East Moment manage to do that by blending the familiar elements of hard electro and triplet beats with unique flavors of progressive rock, middle Eastern synths, and a guitar solo that sounds like it's from the best heavy metal band ever.  All of this combines for the perfect backdrop for the most addictive and effected vocal since Daft Punk’s “Technologic.”  No doubt this will be a big tune for the festival season, the only question is if this the same track that has been buzzing as a Swanky Tunes vs Hard Rock Sofa collab the past few months.

Fiora - “Tornado”

The first time I heard “Waiting For the Night” by Armin van Buuren, I fell in love with the voice of Fiora.  Her classical vocal training is obvious by both her brilliant tone and the lyrical phrasing over the trance pop beats. Since then, she’s explored the worlds of progressive, indie, drum & bass, and deep house with producers as varied as Andy C, Arty, Audibly, and Tensnake.   So what does a Fiora solo single sound like?  The most brilliant hybrid of Sigma and Clean Bandit - classical and pop harmonies over d&b.  The lyrics are so moving that “Tornado” might be the song that takes drum and bass to the top of the US pop chart like Alex Clare’s “Too Close” did for dubstep.   If you like “Tornado” as much I am sure you will, check out her pledge page to support the release of debut album.  You can purchase anything from an autographed CD or t-shirt to an astrology reading or a fully-produced cover song of your choice.

DoubleV & Sylvia Tosun - Hold Your Fire - [ARMADA]

Speaking of classically-trained vocalists, Sylvia Tosun follows up her gorgeous trance track with Andrew Rayel, “Winterburn,” with the equally moving “Hold Your Fire.”  The song couldn’t come at a more perfect time with the sense of impending violent conflicts around the world and the vitriolic discourse being shouted during this divisive election season.  The message is simple: pause, center yourself, and think before you speak or act. That’s not a message you hear often in this instant-gratification, ADHD-fueled world.  The track is just as surprising, as a melodic interlude comes in when you would expect massive beats to pound you.  Also surprising is Sylvia’s vocal delivery, which alternates between her angelic almost operatic singing and a forceful talking voice that we have not heard from her before.  Regardless of how well this song will do in clubs and on the radio, it will make a perfect meme to post when someone has lost their mind with an unnecessary rant.
