SUNDAY FUNDAY: Cheat Codes x Kris Kross Amsterdam - Sex - [SPINNIN]
As Spinnin Records continues its quest to remake every '90s record possible, sometimes the meaning gets lost in translation. Salt-N-Pepa’s groundbreaking hip hop hit “Let’s Talk About Sex” spoke openly about safe sex, elucidating “the good and bad things” with references to censorship and regret. The video for the original mentioned AIDS (a radical thing during the time period) while a second version “Let’s Talk About AIDS,” went all the way. Fast forward 25 years and two trios, Cheat Codes and Kris Kross Amsterdam rework the song as tropical pop, keeping the chorus intact while adding verses about, to say it bluntly, hitting it a second time. It is so pervy and inane that it seems perfect for a mindless Sunday Funday song, especially with the instructional music video. However, we wonder how much more of a positive effect that song could have had if the lyrics were updated with explicit references to today’s situations. I guess we should just ask WWSPD (what would Salt-n-Pepa do).
