More than a Sex Symbol: DJ Keri

The first think you notice about DJ Keri is that she's hot. Scorching hot. There's a reason she's been featured in Playboy. The second thing you notice is that she's blazingly articulate. How many Playboy models use the word "triage" in conversation? And the third: she's down to earth. She laughs at herself and doesn't sound anything like a celebrity.

That is, those are the things you notice if you're not listening to her sets in a club. If she's in the booth, forget it, you won't be able to take your mind off the music and the vibe. In the last year alone, she's toured in Calgary, Indonesia, Panama City Beach, Hong Kong, and Kuala Lumpur, just to name a few. She'll be in San Francisco's upcoming Love Parade. Her albums "Dream Keeper" and "Can U Feel It?" garnered rave reviews from critics and clubbers alike.

In between planning upcoming music videos, new tracks, and tours to China and Russia, Keri made some time to chat with Clubplanet.

Given your looks, is it tough to be taken seriously as a DJ?

People are going to come up with their first impression before they even come up to you. The proof is in the pudding. I'm not even worried about what people are going to think before they see me. Because once they see me, they're going to keep dancing. My talent will hold them there.

It's been a little more than a year since the Playboy shoot. How has this changed your career?

It's been beneficial. But anything that has a lot of pros also has a lot of cons.

Such as?

Don't get me wrong--it's opened doors for me. I've been all over Asia and Venezuela headlining different places. But I'm definitely not a pop tart. And I don't like people thinking of me that way.

Have you been approached by Playboy again?

It was very liberating, but that was a one-time deal. I don't want to do it again. I’m not trying to be Pam Anderson or anything.

You'll be in the upcoming Love Parade. Can you talk a bit about that?

I'm looking forward to it. I'm going to be with Crystal Method and Jagged and a few others. I've only spoken within him twice. I did it last year and had so much fun. [Laughs.] You just don't want it to ever end. It's like something you would see in a movie.

How is it different than performing in a club?

Your music will touch so many different people. People who aren't just club junkies. It's community service, so to speak. I'm introducing them to new music, and I get to share all my feelings with them.

How do you stay so down to earth?

Anytime I get a big head, my husband smacks me back in his face. (Laughs.) He's really been able to help me stay very grounded.

When you're not spinning, what are your favorite clubs to go to?

I go out at 1150 in Atlanta. The Compound in Atlanta. Space in Miami. When I’m in Chicago, I almost always make Level. In New York I like to hit Crobar. My favorite club in the whole, whole club world is the Class Club in China. It's just over the top. With over four stories, it even makes anything in Miami look second-rate.

You've done it all -- DJ, model, businesswoman. Any interested in acting?

I have to get broken into it sooner or later. I don't spend a whole heck of a lot of time in So Cal, but yeah, I would like to get into it.

What's coming up for you?

I'm scheduled to go to the New Orleans conference. Me and DJ Mia are doing a track together. It's going be a very cool. And I'll be touring again in China. I'll be going back to Russia in the next year. I'm doing some stuff with Peter Hay in Chicago. And Russ Harris. And I'm also preparing to do two tracks with Three Bad Brothers.

You sound crazy busy...

I just have to keep busy in that capacity. I don't do well when I’m not busy. I get cabin fever really easily. You just have to find the right triage, have your hand in a little of everything. I'm running my clothing line. Making the music video "Skywalking." You have to keep busy.

With all the work that you do, how do you stay in such good shape?

I run the track 2-4 miles a day. I lift free-weights. I have kind of a military diet.

Military diet. That doesn't sound appealing.

It's a lot of high-protein, low fat, medium carbs. You gotta have some carbs to get you through. And one day a week you can have a "cheat day" with the cheeseburger.

What advice would you give someone just starting out who wants to be a DJ?

You need a good team around you. It's a catch 22. You have to have a product that people are interested in hearing. but in order to get that, you need a team. Just work on producing, networking, getting your name out there. If you're a decent talent, it will happen. It's all about the people you put around you and having good networking. And working really hard.
