The ClubPlanet Interview: Luciana

The ClubPlanet Interview: Luciana

by DJ Ron Slomowicz
10.27.2015

Just like the drag queen Mrs. Kasha Davis says “there’s always time for a cocktail,” there is a common phrase amongst Chicago DJs, “there’s always time for a Luciana song.”  One of the most in-demand EDM vocalists, Luciana works with everyone from Will Sparks and 3Lau to Tiesto and Hardwell to The CubeGuys and GloVibes.  Whether she is singing or rap/talking, her lyrics give life to the best tracks in clubland. Always one to lead a party, Luciana has jumped behind the decks and performs live as both a singer and a DJ.  Yeah, yeah, that sounds like the soundtrack for an epic night of clubbing.

RS: “One by One” with GloVibes is absolutely brilliant.
Luciana: Thank you. I have wanted to work with Leo for quite some time because he is from Naples and I am from Naples as well. We managed to get together about a year ago and we went back and forth with acapellas and tracks and finally we got to this. It is a nice house vibe and up tempo, it keeps them rocking on the floor. I’ve seen it work.

RS: It’s happy and it makes you jump up.
Luciana: It does and I have been in the booth with him when he is playing it and there is just a real energy and a real vibe so I am really excited about it.

RS: Congratulations for winning the IDMA for “Arcadia.”
Luciana: Can you believe it? Honestly prior to them announcing the nominations, I sat down because I just thought there were so many good nominees in the section. I had literally just sat down and they said “the winner is Arcadia.” I was like oh my god; it was lovely and a real moment , that whole night was a moment for me.

RS: You wore that gold dress that night and you always look hot as hell. Who does your style?
Luciana: Well I do my own styling but that particular night Jeffrey Byrant who does all the Pet Shop Boys stuff and Duran Duran did. I went backstage to one of his shows and Neil Tennant had a straw jacket. I told Jeffrey that if he didn’t make me one of those was going to throw myself down the stairs so he made a straw dress for me.

RS: You mean the felching dress in the #Hashtag video?
Luciana: Yes exactly! It has 3,900 straws in it, that’s a lot of time.

RS: That’s a lot of effort. You work with all kind of different producers, why do you think that you are so in demand?
Luciana: One of the things that keep us consistent is the fact that we are always writing melodies, not just for me but for other artists as well. We always have toplines and acapellas and we are always excited to be working with the new sounds. All of the stuff that is coming through now is exciting; it is an exciting time in music. I don’t know what keeps us relevant but I know that I keep writing and if I keep writing, I will always have a track that’s out.

RS: You also work with up and coming artists, how do you find about someone like 3LAU per se?
Luciana: 3LAU was desperate to work with us from Tiesto because he is with Tiesto. Tiesto said that they wanted that melody and 3LAU said that he absolutely wanted it. He sent us the track and it was so hard, it was one of my harder tracks. We wanted to make sure that it was good and that the topline was as good as his track so that is what happened with the 3LAU thing. We did a lot stuff with KSHMR as well and obviously Leo GloVibes.

RS: One of my favorite songs from you is “Jump” with The Cube Guys, have you thought about working with them again?
Luciana: Yes, funny you should say that we have a track out now with The Cube Guys called “U Dance”

RS: You tour a lot and you are on the road a lot, I see you everywhere, how do you maintain your health, your beauty and this body with your crazy schedule?
Luciana: You are so lovely! When I get home I feel like I have to do the bloody Master Cleanse because when you are here all you are doing is drinking and eating, so I go up and down with it. It is very difficult to be healthy when you are on tour so I try to eat fruit and drink water, boring! I try not to do carbs but I am in Miami.

RS: And you are Italian how can you not do carbs?
Luciana: Exactly!

RS: At the end of the night after a gig which hurts more- your ears from the music or your eyes from the camera phones?
Luciana: My ears definitely hurt; I am DJing now so after a set my ears kill me. My feet really hurt; my toes get numb because they are all crushed, it’s part of it though.

RS: What would you like to say to all of your fans out there?
Luciana: Thank you so much for supporting me, I am having a total ball and thank you so much for the nomination, how amazing is that!
