A roundup of great electro, house, trop house, indie, deep, progressive, and vocal tracks.

Vindata ft Kenzie May - "Wide Awake" - [OWSLA]

Los Angeles duo Vindata are ones to watch. Signed by Skrillex, they’ve been busy working on remixes and original tracks with a variety of vocalists. “Wide Awake” sets the tone with what could possibly be described as trop-electro. Atmospheric soundscapes are layered with glitch and ambient dubstep and infused with random samples of animal noises, hollowed chimes and trippy effects. All of these elements are smoothed out for an outer worldly experience. It’s actually kind of hard to describe because something new comes into focus with every listen. Kenzie May’s softly addictive vocals float on top with the catchy chorus hook demanding that you sing along. “Wide Awake” will whet your appetite for Vindata’s debut EP which is set for release next week.

MAKO - “Smoke Filled Room” - [ULTRA]

When the MAKO album eventually gets released, it’s going to feel like a greatest hits compilation. Songs like “Ghost,” “Beam” and “I Won’t You Like Away” have been played everywhere for the past two years. “Smoke Filled Room” brings singer Alex Seaver back to the spotlight with arguably their most commercial record to date, seemingly primed for Top 40 crossover. The soft and slow intro pulls you in with just a soft keyboard line supporting Alex’s emotive vocals. The track builds slowly with subtle textures added until the climactic progressive chorus you expect from the duo. “Smoke Filled Room” was the buzz at last week’s Lollapalooza and it is easy to hear why.

Alison Wonderland ft Safia - “Take It To Reality” - [ASTRALWERKS]

Forgive the hack intro. Bubbling up from down under, Aussie producer/dj Alison Wonderland mixes synthpop and electro for a tripped out sound similar to Vindata mentioned above. Imagine FKA Twigs with comprehensible lyrics. “Take It To Reality” follows the path of of her previous single “U Don’t Know” with chilled out verses leading to a trappy chorus. But this isn’t full on “turned up” trap, it is mellowed out as if you are on qualudes. Together with “I Want U” and “Cold,” “Take It To Reality” is another highlight of Alison Wonderland’s brilliant debut album “Run” which was released earlier this year.

Alex Adair - “Heaven” - [BLACK BUTTER]

British producer Alex Adair exploded onto the scene earlier this year with “Make Me Feel Better,” a deep/trop house track based on a two line sample of “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing” by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. For the follow up “Heaven,” Alex digs up another Motown classic “Heaven Must Have Sent You,” originally sung by the Elgins. This time around the production is more punchy and upbeat giving it the summery feel of a Disney theme park song. That’s actually not meant as a criticism. By incorporating just about all the lyrics of the original, “Heaven” has all the makinga of a crossover pop hit that should last on radio for months to come.

Phillip George & Anton Power - "Alone No More" - [3BEAT]

Built around a sample of Stevie Wonder’s “My Cherie Amour,” the groovy house track “Wish You Were Mine” catapulted producer Phillip George from bedroom producer to superstar DJ. After the shuffling club record “Afraid to Love,” Phillip goes back to his sampling roots for the very familiar “Alone No More.” Based on the debut pop hit from 90’s UK boy band Another Level, the new version is uptempo pop house which sounds like it could have been a remix from the period of the original. Actually, that’s a bit harsh, it sounds current with the vocal effects and the very recognizable bassline. “Alone No More” is so strong and memorable on first listen that it just might hit the number one spot on the UK pop chart which Phillip’s debut so barely missed.

Robbie Rivera & Todd Terry - “Sume Sigh Sey” - [JUICY]

There two previous records are both quality releases but they seem a little, well, expected. Coming more from left field is the legendary Todd Terry. A few weeks ago, he released the fresh house track “Sinister” on Dim Mak records which is nothing like anything else they put out. Up next is a rework of his classic House of Gypsies track “Sume Sigh Sey” from more than 20 years ago. With the touch of Robbie Rivera, the latin-vibed tribal track is pumped up a bit for the bigrooms yet keeps the heart and soul of the original in focus.
