The ClubPlanet Interview: FTampa

by DJ Ron Slomowicz

No, he doesn’t hate the city in Florida, FTampa is an abbreviation for his real name Felipe Tampa. Following in the footsteps of great Brazilian DJ/producers (Gui Boratto, Felguk, Wehbba), FTampa has risen to the international scene.  Tracks like “5 Days,” “Hero,” “Slammer,” and “Samba” showcase a variety of massive big room sounds, but his unique signature is a playful energy that shines through in all of them.  At WMC, we chatted about everything from working with Avicii and Shawnee Taylor to dealing with internet trolls.  Throughout the conversation, that playful energy shines through in every word he says while smiling and enjoying every moment.

RS: Did you fly in from Brazil?
FTampa: Yes. I was actually just in LA, but I flew from Brazil to LA and then from LA to here.

RS: What is the scene like in Brazil?
FTampa: It is totally different than anywhere else in the world. It is not like “Jump,” “Jump," “Jump.”  Brazil has more vocals and more dance and it has more of a club scene.

RS: So it’s not just reggaeton everywhere. So I love the track that you did with Felguk- “Slap,” how did the collaboration come about?
FTampa: We were trying to make a track for a long time and then we decided that it was the perfect time to make something in melbourne bounce. Everyone played the track and we are very happy with the result.

RS: Was your mix of Avicii's “Hey Brother” an official mix or a bootleg?
FTampa: It was a bootleg that I made for a Christmas party. I have made an official remix for Avicii, but “Hey Brother” went so much better and I still play it in my shows.

RS: I noticed on your SoundCloud, often times it says “disabled comments.” Why do you do that?
FTampa: Because nowadays there are a lot of haters saying a lot of shit. It’s bad and almost all of the haters are DJs trying to be famous and they are telling people that they aren’t good. I just decided to disable the comments because every time I would start to read them I would get angry. I just put the comments back, though, and so everyone can comment, I don’t care about the haters anymore.  Now, I don’t care...

RS: I love the song that you did with Shawnee Taylor “Let It Go,” how did you work with her as a vocalist?
FTampa: It was an amazing experience. Shawnee has been here for a long time and I have only been here for 4 years, so it was a great experience to work with her. We talked a lot and the track was actually a theme for a big Brazilian festival called Dream Valley. Working with someone like her is huge.

RS: Who are some other Brazilian talents that we should be looking for?
FTampa: You should take a look at WAO, we just made a collab and we just made a new remix together. Also my friends from Dirtyloud have a hot track called "Panic," and there are a lot of upcoming Brazilian producers and a lot of talent there.

RS: Was the WAO track “Troy?”
FTampa: Yes. It stands for We Are One, but they made it WAO.

RS: You seem really busy this week, how many gigs do you have?
FTampa: I have no idea, because there are too many, but I am playing in a lot of countries and places. It has been so cool.

RS: With all your travel and productions, how do you maintain a healthy lifestyle?
FTampa: I actually can’t maintain my health, but I am trying. It is almost impossible because it is just about eating food at the right time, and I can’t do that.

RS: At the end of a gig, which hurts more- your ears from the sound or your eyes from all the pictures?
FTampa: My ears.  There are a lot of pictures, but you can wear sunglasses.  With the sound, there is no escape.

RS: If you could go back and talk to yourself when you were age 18 what would you say to yourself?
FTampa: Make some EDM music; I used to play in bands for a long time and it wasn’t a waste of time but when I changed it , that’s when everything happened.

RS: What is coming up next?
FTampa: I have a remix that I just made with WAO which is for Snoop Dogg, and I have a lot of other tracks. This is going to be a busy year.

RS: What would you like to say to all of your fans out there?
FTampa: Thank you so much for your support, I will keep releasing a lot of new tracks and I hope that you like them.
