The ClubPlanet Interview: Thomas Newson

The new generation of Dutch DJs is exploding worldwide.  Meet rising star Thomas Newson.  At just 20 years old, he already has an impressive list of big club tracks (Blizzard, Krypton, Pallaroid); but it is the track “Flute” for which he is best known.  Working with New World Sound, he captured the classic instrument and reshaped it for the EDM generation.  His new collaboration with Bassjackers, “Wave Your Hands,” is topping the Beatport sales charts which is a sign that there is a lot more to come from the musical prodigy.

RS: How’s it going?
Thomas Newson: Great, I played at the Protocol Party last night and everyone was there. Afrojack, Martin Garrix, and of course Nicky Romero was there. It was great to play for Nicky.

RS: Was there any reaction to your set last night?
Thomas Newson: I think it was good, but I don’t know.

RS: Was the highlight your “Flute” mix?
Thomas Newson: No, “Pallaroid.” It was released on Revealed last year,  but it is still one of the highlights of my set.

RS: When you did the track “Flute,” did you have any idea it would become so big?
Thomas Newson: No, I never thought it would become so big.

RS: Did you hear the Danny Howard mix?
Thomas Newson: Yes, it was good.  I told him and he said thanks.

RS: When you made the track with New World Sound, how did y’all collaborate together?
Thomas Newson: Last year, we were releasing tracks on the same label and we contacted each other on Facebook. They sent me a small demo of “Flute” and asked me if I could do something with it. I said yes, and so I started working on it and finished it in a week and we sent it to Spinnin’ Records and they loved it.

RS:  And then the vocal mix with Lethal Bizzle exploded In the UK.  I absolutely loved your mix of “Arcadia,” how did it feel to get a Hardwell remix?
Thomas Newson: Thank you.  I was so honored to do a remix for Hardwell.  He asked me personally, and it was so good to remix that track.

RS: You seem really young, how old are you?
Thomas Newson: I am 20.

RS: How long have you been doing music?
Thomas Newson: I started when I was 14 years old, but I only did it for one week because computer games were more important for me. When I was 16 years old, I started making music again and after one year I had my first release on Spinnin’ Records.

RS: What part of Netherlands are you from?
Thomas Newson: The South part of the Netherlands, about an hour from Amsterdam.

RS: What’s the area called?
Thomas Newson: North Brabant.

RS: You are the first guy that I have met who is not from Breda.
Thomas Newson: Yeah, kind of.

RS: You were in a writer’s camp a few weeks ago.  How did that work out?
Thomas Newson: Yeah, that was for Cloud Nine.  It was my first time and it was really nice to work with songwriters. It is a new way to make music; I have never done it before.

RS: Do you normally go in with a finished track and have them write vocals to it or how does that work?
Thomas Newson: Yeah, we write things together and afterwards we write some lyrics and then go and record it.

RS: What is coming next from you?
Thomas Newson: I have new tracks coming up on Revealed Recordings, and I did a remix for Marco V which is coming out on Ultra Records. I also have a new collab with Bassjackers that we are still working on. I also have a new collab with Jay Hardway, so I have a lot of new tracks coming up.

RS: What would you like to say to all of your fans out there?
Thomas Newson: Thank you for the support and hopefully I’ll see you somewhere around the world.

Interview conducted at Amsterdam Dance Event 2014.
