Today's episode of #CPR is a special one, as we not only have a guest mix from Hook N Sling, but the man behind the massive smash "Momentum" (featured as our 'Tune of the Week' on last week's show and available NOW on Beatport) also took a few minutes to chat with us. Here is how it went down:
Hook N Sling Interview
MB: Thanks for taking some time to speak with CPR. Your latest production “Momentum” which released on November 10th is one of the music unique sounding tunes I’ve heard in quite a while. How did the track come to be?
HNS: That track came about in a bit of a cut and paste way…i wrote the breakdown a year or so ago but the beats and the main drop was something i wrote a few months back. I really wanted to do something fresh with this record..especially with the main drop.
MB: Keeping with the theme of your work in the studio, what software do you utilize in the studio and are there any specific plug in’s that you are currently really into right now?
HNS: I use Ableton on a macbook with a pair of Genelec 8050A’s. All the sounds in ‘Momentum’ come from Spire, Ace, Samples and maybe a bit of sylenth but i don't think much.
MB: I think the first tune where I heard your sound was your remix of “Ghost Ship” as the Swedish House Mafia (I think particularly Axwell) used to play it in most of his sets for a while. Do you still go back to that record at all? Of all of your productions, if you had to choose a favorite, which would it be?
HNS: Haha…no i never play that record anymore. But people still ask me about it. I think if i HAD to choose a favorite it would be Reason. i don't know, if you ask me next week i might have said Tokyo By Night!
MB: Speaking of Axwell, possibly your most known track is “Tokyo By Night” which you just released the original mix after the huge success of Axwell’s remix earlier this year. With a record that reaches such a high level of success, I always find it interesting that there is always a cool back-story only known to those involved with the record. Was that the case with “Tokyo By Night”? Can you share some details on how this song came about?
HNS: Yeah that song definitely has an interesting story behind it. I mean it all began in 2011 when i first wrote it. I previewed like 8 seconds of it and people loved it but i hadn't even finished the record. So after spending months trying to finish it i hit a dead end with Axwell, we couldn't finish the record…so i decided to take a break on it. As it turns out 12months later i felt like i cracked it, so i sent it to him again and he loved. We were both really happy on how it now sounded and yeah ax offered to remix it. I mean theres a lot more to it but thats pretty much all the important bits!
MB: What are your thoughts on the whole “EDM explosion” that America is currently in the middle of? Have you seen a shift at all in the crowds or the overall taste of the fans?
HNS: Yeah its cool, i mean theres never the same crowd really, it always changes…whether its Vegas or LA or New York…i feel like every city has its kinda sound.
MB: Finally, when you aren’t working on music or touring, what do you enjoy in your free time (if there is any left!)?
HNS: Ha, yeah theres not much left between shows but when I'm home in LA I'm usually hanging out with my dog or going to my favorite pancake place near my house.
Thanks to Hook N Sling for taking a few minutes to speak with ClubPlanet Radio. Before we get to his guest mix, here are some of the highlights from today's show...
Deadmau5 & Kaskade - I Remember (Shiba San Remix) [ULTRA]
; In celebration of the 5 year anniversary of its release, Ultra has re-released some Mau5 classics with a new twist to them. One of the coolest, and possibly most unexepected, is Shiba San's housey take on "I Remember". The original vocals are melded with a groovin' bass line that gives the classic a new life. Following the success of "Okay" earlier this year, Shiba San keeps the groove coming.
Chocolate Puma & Firebeatz - I Can't Understand [SPINNIN]
The pairing of house legends Chocolate Puma and youngsters Firebeatz seems to be an unlikely one, but after the 2013 banger "Sausage Fest" that they threw together, we couldn't wait for a sequel. "I Can't Understand" is a piano driven house tune that drops into a deep bass drop to pair with the piano and work well. Like any Chocolate Puma track, the low end controls this track, and leaves us wanting another collab between the 2 DJ duos.
Shelco Garcia & TEENWOLF v. Type3Species ft Nuthin' Under A Million - Run To You [MIXMASH]
Coinciding with the boys first ever appearance here in NYC this past weekend was the release of their huge anthem "Run To You" featuring Nuthin' Under A Million on the vocals. This tune features everything you wish for a progressive anthem to have: from its vocals to the melody it gives the complete package to raise the goosebumps and have you pressing the repeat button on your player. This may be my favorite track from the Mixmash Vegas residents and with 2015 approaching I know they have more in store.
CPR TUNE OF THE WEEK
Norman Doray & Arno Cost - Strong (Ansolo Remix) [SIZE]
Ansolo is a name that you should know for 2015. He is on the brink of superstardom, even though he is already a superstar. Already? Well if you've seen the movie "The Fault in Our Stars" or know of actor Ansel Elgort (you can pickup the December issue of GQ and check the cover) he is ANSOLO. Coming off his collab with Tom Staar "Totem" which received the most plays on Soundcloud of any Size Records release, EVER, he is back with this anthem remix of Strong. By this time next year, I am sure he will be among the biggest names in the industry so stay tuned.
Axwell & Ingrosso – Can't Hold Us Down [DEF JAM]
When the famed Swedish House Mafia split up, Axwell & Ingrosso stayed together and went into the studio and worked on an album. "Can't Hold Us Down" is the first single and is one of the many that stuck out to me when I heard them live at Governor's Ball in NYC this past August. The rolling bass line pays homage to Daft Punk and the track just continues to drive from beginning to end. With more tracks on the way very soon, the Axwell x Ingrosso project is taking on an interesting sound and we are all excited to see where it leads.
Hook N Sling Guest Mix
In addition to the interview above, Hook N Sling provided #CPR with a guest mix which will also appear on WPTY today as well. His tune "Tokyo By Night" appeared on everyone's radars this year when Axwell remixed the track and after taking care of some remix dutires himself, he is back with the original "Momentum" on Doorn Recordings. Be sure to check out his socials below and let us know what you think of his guest mix!
