Jason Strauss went from a high school promoter to one of the most powerful tycoons in the industry, along with his business partner and long time friend, Noah Tepperberg. From the success of their Strategic Hospitality Group and venues including Marquee, TAO, and LAVO, Strauss and Tepperberg are two names that continue to solidify their spots at the very top of the food chain. For nearly 13 years, the two has taken the nightlife and restaurant scene by storm and have no plans of slowing down.

We had the wonderful opportunity to sit down with Mr. Strauss himself during EDC week to discuss how he came about to build the incredible empire known as The Strategic Group. The marketing, promotions, and special events company links to premium nightlife and restaurants all over Vegas, New York, Hamptons and many other locations worldwide. Today, he is one of the most influential mavens in the scene with immense accomplishments.

CP: How did you start out knowing you wanted to be in this business?

JS: Actually, when I first started out, It was just a hobby. I was pretty much just throwing parties during my college days. We would make our own flyers, post them on bulletin boards, basically everywhere around school and eventually beyond campus. We made phone calls - back then we used beepers (laughs), we made guest lists and made our parties exclusive and it just ended up growing and doing really well. Eventually, it wasn't just a hobby anymore..it was a business. And with all the money that we made, my partner, Noah and I teamed up to start the company in 2003.

CP: That actually was the next thing I was going to ask you! There are many companies in the nightlife industry trying to make it big -- but in the end, it clearly isn’t about just owning a club. How would you differentiate your company from the others?

JS: I think it’s because of our philosophy in maintaining good relationships and making sure that our customers and clients are happy. That is our main priority and we put that in all our services whether in nightlife or restaurants or for marketing and events. We want to focus on giving them the ultimate experience as a hospitality company, so we make sure that’s never forgotten. We work, very hard and are perfectionists up to the tiniest details for our all our different events, from beginning to end.

CP: You have such a growing empire, how are all your many endeavors so successful? How do you maintain them? I mean it must be challenging and exciting.

JS: I mean we all work extremely hard to keep up with the trends and to stay creative and smart. We always strive to push ourselves to evolve and get better. I mean each venue has it’s own concept and unique design element. They each tell a different type of story in their own way. For example, TAO is asian-themed and LAVO, which means “to bathe” in Latin, is European-inspired. Actually, many of our inspirations came from real bath-houses all around Europe. Each venue carries themselves with their own richness and experience that it brings to the people. At the end of the day or night, we just want to make sure that every one of our customers and clients walks out of our venues with a smile on their face.

CP: So you and Noah have been business partners for over 20 years now, 23 years to be exact. What is your secret to maintain such a healthy long business partnership?

JS: Trust and Open Communication. Just like any healthy relationship, business should be the same way. Without trust and communication, there is no relationship. We also motivate each other and value each others opinions on things. As our business grew, we both grew as well and to be honest we did go through our fair share of business partners and not everyone is a good fit but we ended up working real well together.

CP: Let’s talk “Social Media” -- How would you describe the pace of the scene now after the social media boom?

JS:  Oh yeah, Social Media pretty much changed the game and everything blew up especially with twitter and instagram. Just like always, we had to adapt in order to stay on top of our game. I mean these platforms definitely opened up the nightlife industry as well as the EDM scene. Now we have an entire team that does social media for us and we make sure that we are always up to date with the newest trends and marketing strategies.
