Pretty Lights Illuminates Roseland Ballroom For The Last Time

Pretty Lights Illuminates Roseland Ballroom For The Last Time

It was towards the end of his set, after Derek Vincent Smith (a.k.a. Pretty Lights) pointed in my direction, when I found myself talking to a random stranger next to me who asked if I knew Derek. This man told me how Derek had walked into the store he owns earlier that day, Hat Club, in SoHo, and bought hats for everyone in his crew. Funny, I had thought, because I definitely had noticed the gold-brimmed hats, even if most of them were Yankees hats, and the Boston Red Sox were winning the World Series while Pretty Lights played "CREAM State of Mind."

But anyways, not knowing who "Pretty Lights" was, Derek personally invited him to the show to check it out. Pretty fucking cool, right? If you know anything about PL, his live shows are eargasmic and full of funk, almost indescribable. You really have to experience it in order to understand.

photo photo3_zps547b1e71.jpgLast week, he brought his 'Analog Future Tour,' in support of his latest studio album A Color Map Of The Sun, right through NYC, complete with a full-on live band at one of our favorite venues on the planet, that recently announced it would be closing its doors forever come spring 2014. The musicians that came together to build this brilliant band include Adam Deitch of Break Science, keyboardist Brian Coogan of New Orleans All-Star, keyboardist Borahm Lee also from Break Science, Scott Flynn from John Brown's Body on the trombone and Eric Bloom from Lettuce on the trumpet.

Pretty Lights & Co. played almost three hours of what felt like a "Best Of Pretty Lights" show, serenading us with favorites like "Hot Like Dimes", "High School Art Class", his sonically mind-blowing remix of Pink Floyd's "Time", blended with his therapeutic trip hop and funk samples like in "More Important Than Michael Jordan." The live band put a new twist on every song. It was like seeing PL for the first time all over again.

Derek recently announced that him and his band have been working on a...wait for it...LIVE BAND ALBUM, and have been recording it throughout the tour. The live band made such a difference, being able to actually hear each instrument's sound bounce off the walls rather than hearing an assortment of analog sounds. In case you haven't noticed, the lighting production was pretty epic too, perhaps that's why they call him "Pretty Lights."
