Breaking Down Ultra Music Festival 2013 Week 1: The Numbers, The Nudity & More
by Angela Samartano, Editor
While weekend 1 attendees of Ultra Music Festival may be nursing their hangovers from the three day festival today, the numbers are starting to come in as to what damage was done to Miami’s Bayfront Park. Although the number of people who partied peacefully outweighs those who didn’t, the city of Miami and security on duty are beginning to sort who came, who raved around the world, and who went overboard.
As of now, the crowd for the first of two consecutive weekends for Ultra Music Festival 2013 has already reached 350,000 people. This number is double than who attended last year’s festivities, and excluding the new second weekend. For those not a part of the massive crowd, there were reports of over 8 million views worldwide on the Ultra live streaming broadcast through their YouTube Channel. Throughout the weekend there were worldwide trending topics on Twitter for multiple artists performing as well as Ultra Music Festival itself. The global phenomenon unfolded for all of us over the last three days whether you were there to party in person, or anywhere else under the sun.
While numbers have still not been finalized, Miami Police has already reported a total of 84 arrests during the weekend as of Monday morning. Up front last year’s number, the arrests were mostly due to people trying to enter Bayfront Park without paying, disorderly conduct, and narcotics. Just a few short months ago, Miami officials tried to shut down the plans for a second weekend of the festival claiming that an overwhelming number of partygoers are “high on something”. While the city lost that battle, there were only a minimal amount of arrests made due to drugs during the first weekend.
Outlandish ravers are always expected at any electronic music festival. Last year we all watched in awe when a YouTube video of a young woman was uploaded from Ultra Music Festival hugging, humping and kissing a tree. As if anyone could possibly forget. This year, we take the term “let’s get weird” to a new level as there are reports, and video footage, of male nudity throughout the weekend 1 festival. In the video below, you can watch this man in his own world and in his birthday suit at Ultra Music Festival this past weekend. Although he is handcuffed by the end, it is uncertain whether or not he was actually arrested or was just given a ride back to shelter and clothing.
Overall a monstrous success, officials throughout the city of Miami, and fans traveling from all over the world, are anxious to see what next weekend’s festivities have to bring during the second installment of Ultra Music Festival.
