Rok Box Made Me Do It
BY: Jack Colton

We were able to catch up with the man behind Tabú’s weekly party Rok Box to find out what, exactly, he feels is so unique about this Monday night event that often ncourages people to get a little more unruly on a weeknight than they might have originally planned.

Jack Colton: How many years have you been doing Rok Box?

Randy Davila:
We first did it about three years ago as a once-a month event, and then we actually only ended up with a total of nine parties. The unbelievable part about it was that people were still talking about Rok Box. It’s the only party in town that you hear people actually referring to the name instead of just saying, “Oh, I’m going to Tabú tonight.”

JC: What do you feel makes a good party in Las Vegas?

Davila:
First and foremost, the crowd; secondly, the music. I feel like the music at most places in Las Vegas just gets boring, as they don’t think outside the box in what they can play.

JC: Was that part of the inspiration behind the name “Rok Box?”

Davila: Yeah, that’s the whole thing. It’s all about putting the right people in the room with the right attitude and, of course, with the right music. And while it’s not the way I would throw an actual rock party, we have it set up to where it will appeal to everyone’s music taste by playing rock music, mash-ups and even an infusion of hip-hop. Even the hard-core rock fans come by and enjoy themselves.

JC: What do you think the saying “Rok Box made me do it” really means?

Davila: I think a lot of people go there and get a lot crazier than they planned to. I get phone calls all the time from people saying, “Man, your Rok Box is (censored) killing me, yo!” They go there and say they aren’t going to drink or anything, and then they get there and the energy is so high that they just end up getting wasted. So in the end, the saying ends up being a way for people to blame what happened to them on being at a good party.

JC: Has anyone ever not been able to handle going to Rok Box every week?

Davila: Jimmy Greenup.

JC: Wait, the legendary Jimmy Greenup? The man who has been rumored to have partied for three months straight?

Davila: Yeah, even a couple of weeks ago he missed one. I called him to find out why. His excuse was simple, “Dude, I couldn’t handle it.” I asked him if I had really just heard Jimmy Greenup say he couldn’t party, and all he could say was that he “just couldn’t do it.”

Rok Box happens every Monday night at Tabú inside the MGM Grand. Visit jackcolton.com for more from the Las Vegas local.
