Miami Girl About Town - August 14 2007

The dog days are here. How you guys do it at the outdoor clubs and lounges is beyond me. I even passed off my on my usual monthly art walk in the Wynwood area this Saturday and an invitation for a beer at Zeke’s on Lincoln during the week. It’s just too hot.

But Thursday I sucked it up. After a long day of work, I had enough time to shower, get dressed, and head out to the birthday bash for Nick D’Annunzio at the Hotel Victor pool area – an outdoor gala.

I found Nick in his cabana, wearing a “Just Say No” tee, which was naturally funny if you know his story. After the b-day song, Tracy Young filled the air with music, while Mother Nature took care of the light show (a beautiful thunder storm erupted out at sea) and disco ball cupcakes were handed out.

Now that party was not as hot as I expected but it could have been all the people watching I was doing or once again it was my trusty fan that saved me from the sweat.

My interest in clubbing sparked on Friday night when I got the text about that Time Sweeney of DFA was in town spinning at PS 14, but work sucked up my night. Fortunately he came by Pawn Shop on Saturday and did a set there. That made my night. Tim, they just don’t know – you were fantastic!

On my way home, I heard about the great night at Space via a gazillion text messages from mixed people. Living so close with all the energy I needed, I turned down a night in Space for a night of sleep and to get up early on Sunday morning to catch a movie.

So I got up early and beat the big crowds to see Bourne Ultimatum. Excellent. But lets’ talk about the second one I snuck into. I heard what the critics said about the film, but I usually don’t care. In my house, Hector Lavoe is like Frank Sinatra at the Sopranos home, so I made a quick left and plopped myself down to watch El Cantante.

What can I say… I left there with more questions than answers and a mini concert of what J Lo and Marc are bringing to their summer tour. I really wished they would have talked more about his second child, his other women and his rise and fall with more importance than focused on the music. His story is more than what this film did.

The critics were right when the said there was a lack of character development. Still, a part of me liked it; that is because I was throwing down some salsa steps in the isles.

That movie made miss salsa dancing. A lot.

Coming soon DJ Tocadisco at The Cove aka La Covacha in Doral. That’s September 30th. But before, Labor Day Weekend…let’s talk about that next week.
