Ibiza: DC's Second Coming

Ibiza nightclub has some big shoes to fill. Being deemed the rejuvenation of the nightlife scene in Washington DC and being given the responsibility of rebirthing the large, entertainment lounge? Well, that’s just unfair. Even Lebron James needs time before he transforms the NBA, so why not give Ibiza a little time to live up to the high standards of its namesake?

Nonetheless, the biggest club to open in years began with a bang. At its grand opening, host Kim Kardashian and DJ AM (acquaintances of Paris Hilton and Nicole Hilton, oops, I mean Ritchie) lit up the club late into the night, even though they took their sweet time making it on stage. Sigh, celebrities. Large crowds danced to good mixes of hip hop, house and trance, while the anxious throngs lined up for the chance to get in. In all of DC, the newborn Ibiza was the place to be.

Yet, while drinking my sadly weak Red Bull and vodka, I realized this place was not going to bring about the new and improved club scene of Washington DC past. It was not going to demolish the current lounge bar phenomenon which ultimately took out the club scene. At least not immediately.  Rather, it was going to repeat the path of its nightclub forbearers, bringing back the places we ached to go to back in the day, or tried to get into but couldn’t afford to. And thus, I shall nickname it, Ibiza, Jr.

But, that being said, Ibiza is a knockout. With 30,000 square feet, they have designed an amazing space with a dizzying array of bars, a phenomenal sound system that can be heard in any corner, and a rooftop deck that's not unlike a tiki hut straight out of Puerto Rico. With three separate themes for the three mains bar areas, people can catch a distinctly different taste wherever they go. The River Bar has a constantly flowing stream beneath it, while the Fire Bar has a billowing smoke stack erupting every few minutes. Lastly, and my favorite, the Ice Bar allows you to chill your glass IN the bar while you enjoy it. Talk about service—who doesn’t want to chill their Corona while chatting up that cute bartender?

Ibiza may have a tough road ahead. Restoring DC’s nightclub scene will be a difficult experience, but they have a good chance of at least being the one and only option. And with the infamous Glow party migrating here from Fur, the odds are with them.  It’s definitely a destination for the well-heeled and well-dressed, not to mention a mandatory stop for world-class DJs, stars and other luminaries as they make their way through DC.  And to Ibiza, I wish you the best.  I can’t wait for you to live up to your name.
