The Mai Tai

Thanksgiving time is here again, and since we found no drinks in our mental rolodex that had to do with turkey, we decided to hit the randomizer button and tell you a little about the humble Mai Tai.

Famed restaurateur/barkeep Trader Vic is said to have first concocted this libation in 1944. Not in some tropical paradise, either, but in his restaurant in a suburb of San Francisco. It remains popular today, as a potent daiquiri variation.

Today, many variations of this drink are available, but our favorite recipe is as follows:

The Mai Tai

  • 2 ounces dark rum
  • ½ ounce curacao
  • ¾ once lime juice
  • Splash of orgeat
  • Splash of grenadine

In a shaker, combine the rum, curacao and lime juice. Splash on the orgeat (a syrup of orange and almond flavors) and finally a splash of grenadine (for color). Strain into a tall, frosted glass filled with ice.
