In a neighborhood so entrenched in trends, its refreshing to find a little escape. And, while we do mean little (around 900 square feet), Ara Wine Bar earns major points when it comes to ambiance. Step up through the narrow front door and lead your friends to one of the tiny, cushy tables in the back. The lighting gets lower as the evening gets later, so by 9pm, Ara becomes a perfect date spot or early night lounge for pre-party Pinot. You won't find the same uppity attitudes as you will in most of the Meatpacking District – this staff will gladly help you pair a wine or cocktail with your appetizer. Bottom line: once you've indulged with good treatment and even better vino, you'll be much more tolerant of the long lines and crowded dance floors down the street.
