Apotheke, Greenwich Village

I reserved a large space at Apotheke to celebrate my 40th birthday on Sunday, Jan. 1. I was assured weeks before by their "reservations professional" that yes, they were open on Jan. 1, and yes, they would reserve a large chunk of tables for me. Since Apotheke is too cool to answer their phones or respond to the emails that they encourage you to send them on their ultra-cool website, I was unable to reach them two or three days before the event. So I had to rely on the answering machine message which indicated they would be closed for the holidays on Dec. 24, reopening on Dec. 29. No word about Dec. 31 or Jan. 1. So I figured we were "on".

As it turned out, I was quite wrong. On the evening of my party, around 10 of my friends stood with me in the rain outside a closed Apotheke and tried desperately to contact the 30 or so invited friends who were traveling to the bar by subway, PATH train, car etc., to let them know it was a "no-go" and that they should go to another bar that we all decided on as the rain poured down. I guess they decided to close, and of course they were too cool to call me or email me and let me know I ought to find another bar for my 40th.
