Braai Chelsea, Venue Description

Try not to get distracted by the slender woman sauntering around with a bowl of water for hand-washing between courses. Braai, a South African BBQ joint that takes its African theme to the max, has a bamboo-thatched ceiling (which is meant to pull in the BBQ smoke and give the joint a hut-like appearance), exposed brick and wood, a menu that includes everything from oxtail to ostrich -- there’s even a driftwood toilet paper-roll holder in the bathroom. Given the location it’s no surprise that the tourist-heavy crowd is on the older-side, but the service is friendly and the food is well-seasoned ($7-16 appetizers, $28-24 entrees). The bar, located in the middle of the restaurant, attracts a singles crowd lingering as they sip on one of Braai’s signature Cape Docor cocktails (KWV Brandy, White Guava Juice and Patron Citronge, $12). For bigger crowds, there’s the back brandy room which seats about 12 on a long wooden table – though with a side-view onto the restrooms the location leaves something to be desired.

I am a South African living in NY and I really cannot pay these prices, man Bobotie, Boerewors & pap, fish & slap chips. These are South African fast foods. The prices ons some dishes need to be revised.

I really did enjoy this restaurant and the quality of the food was fantastic, however I felt that the food was way overpriced. Charging $12 for one single fish cake is ludicrous! I do hope that the prices will get better because I would love to go back again and would also like to recommend it.

Loved it! Very personable staff - offered the option of waiting for an outside seat or inside seat initially rather than just deciding for us. Great, creative food in look and taste, had crayfish appetizer & peri peri prawns main, w/ malva pudding for desert. All scrumptious. Nice wines too - makes sense, as they're owned by the same owners as the fun Xai Xai Wine Bar just down the street. Some course delivery timing issues (main came out just before we'd finished with our appetizers); they're only open 2 weeks now so expect that will get better with practice. Definitely recommend it.

Bartender was great! We ordered dinner, beef medium-well with jacket potatoes and steamed veggies. The meat came very rare, and when we sent the plate back, meat came back better but with no potato. Seeing as we were hungry,we ate the meat and the potato came 20 minutes later. We obviously didn't want the potato anymore.the owner questioned why the potato was sent back and when the situation was explained to her,she didn't even bother to come over and apologize. I wouldn't order food here. Service is mediocre and food is way overpriced!
