Amalia - The upscale modern vibe at this new Midtown restaurant is not short on the excesses, with beautiful oak paneling, sleek leather-lined walls and black glass chandeliers glittering throughout. The five distinct spaces at this bi-level venue are anchored by the raised platform area, which is outfitted with portraits of psychologist Sigmund Freud and his mother Amalia - the restaurant’s oddball namesake. It’s not all about the visual sense though, as Chef Ivy Stark, formerly of Dos Caminos and Rosa Mexicano, offers an eclectic upscale menu and extensive wine list. A separate entrance (or the “floating” staircase in the back) leads you to the tiny D’Or lounge, where a DJ booth looks down on a hipper, sexy space, with suede seating along the glistening gold bar.
