The Box New York, Venue Description

Box, The - Walk through an unsuspecting door in a sketchy Lower East Side alleyway and step back in time as you enter The Box, a genuine 1930's-style vaudeville saloon. Well, maybe more gimmick than genuine, as this bar/lounge/music venue is a little more upscale than all that, with a sleek interior, modern menu and schmancy cocktail list. The Box presents live shows every night, with stage performances ranging from cabarets to full-length plays to surprise shows by big name artists. After the dinner hour performances, DJs take over the two-level space and an enthusiastic mixed-age audience parties all night.

Criminal Fraud - Avoid II
Just like LEH, I went to the Box, ordered one bottle of champagne, at a quoted a price of $75, and was given a bill at the end of the night for over $2000 for the one bottle of champagne. I discussed the matter with the waitress and then with the manager to no avail. Now other action is going to have to be taken to resolve this problem. If you want to go to the box, be careful, do not provide your credit card up front because they can then charge whatever they want despite what they tell you they are going to charge. Good luck

Criminal Fraud - Avoid
Beware of criminal fraud - Absolute Horror - Avoid at all costs.
This venue overcharged our tab, adding a completely fictional cost of $2000.00 to our bill. In addition to this insult, they attempted to show us a fraudulent menu that misrepresented the charges to which we agreed.
We happily paid the $100 per person cover charge, as well as the exorbitant $225 per bottle for 3 bottles of recent vintage Moet and Chandon champagne. But when our bill arrived, it was well over $2500 dollars, far beyond either the cover charge or the price per bottle to which we agreed and to which the menu referenced. '
We argued with the waitress, who brought us a fraudulent menu pricing the Moet champagne at $600 per bottle. The menu that every person in our three-person party had examined earlier previously stated $250 per bottle.
We don't necessarily mind overpaying for champagne and cover charge for a clearly inferior cabaret show if it is presented in a trendy venue, but an attempt by the venue to blatently con its customers out of $2000 is far beyond the realm of even the most unscrupulous nightclub business practices. I will be filing a police report against the venue, and caution all potential customers to examine their tab closely.
The show was poor, far too short and the perfromers did not exhibit much talent. But all of its shortcomings could have been overlooked if it practiced an honest, legal business. But it doesn't, and I am happy to state as much in a court of law. Beware fraudulent menus and pricing, demand that the price you agree to be the price you pay, and avoid the venue entirely if you want a pleasant and problem-free night out.

Some of the nicest people I have ever met worked at The Box.
Went with my BF for my birthday - upfront we did not do the late night kiddo show --- we went with adults for the dinner show.

Treated like gold.

Doorman did the whole red velvet rope to keep us outside until opening time - which was nice everyone going in talked a bit. He was fine - I dont look to a doorman to be my buddy.

The hostest was sweet as can be - settled us into our own private romantic box upstairs (lovely lesbian couple in the booth next to us on a date - and a bachlorette party in the next booth).

The dancers came up and performed in our box at one point.
Food was very tasty and served on funky mismatched plates.
Dinner was well paced - flaming drinks were fun.

Show was great - esp the male singing/dancing group from Harlem - who could not have been nicer after the show.

MC is a hoot.

Really 100% a great very unique experience.

I have a feeling they do not kiss butt at this place --- thus the hate messages. Sure it is CRAZY expensive at night after the dinner show --- but if you can not afford a place - why go ??? You are not the target market --- not your crowd. I was very happy to spend $300 for dinner and the show - as opposed to $1000 to see the show later with drunk people. ENJOY

Just so you know, the doorman (Gans) whom everyone below seems to be complaining about is actually an Albanian pedophile with a felony record and a history of molesting young boys. --------------------------- Luckily for you, though, he also is known for having a fondness for eating his own feces. So, in case you're interested, i.e., desperate enough to actually want to go to this Bridge & Tunnel club which was cool about 10 months ago but has definitely jumped the shark, here's a tip as to how to get into the doorman's good graces: dress up in a poopy diaper and ask him to lick the fecal matter off of your butt. Then, for good measure, throw in an offer to give him an old-fashioned rim job the way his crack-whore of a mother used to "back in the old country," and you'll be all good. Hope that helps. ---------- p.s. all kidding aside, the guy actually is a convicted pedophile , so please do think twice about spending your money at this LAME joint

Your Black AMEX wont get you through the door. (NOT Recommended)
Late Show: The host at the door was extremely RUDE!! They scan you up and down, make you wait outside even if you have a reservation. Unprofessional, and very (@$* Staff! Been there before for a early show - Show itself was alright - something different. However the interior is disgusting, old smelly furniture and way over priced for such garbage performances. You come ready to have a good time, pay thousands for an over rated experience and yet they treat you like a second class citizen. If you have respect for yourself, save your self the time and money by NOT going to "thebox" .

Do NOT Block The Box...Fine + 2 Points (NOT Recommended)
Usually, when you make reservations, you expect that the place you make them will honor them. I made reservations at The Box several weeks prior since I wanted to take out my friends for a good time on my birthday. I (who made the reservations) came with my wife first since our party (3 other ppl) were a little late. My wife and I came on time at 11:20pm and were asked if we had reservations and I told the guy with the hat that we did. He looks at the list which was hanging on a nail by the door and told us “I do not see your reservations & asked if it could have been on a different name”… I told him that it should be under my name. I personally saw my name on that list since it was hanging close to the velvet ropes. In any case…he told us that we had to wait until our entire party would arrive so that he could see if he would “like my friends”. He told me…”Im sorry for making you wait but you are not a regular customer and I need to see if your friends match our club”. When our party arrived at around 12ish..he told me “I like you, but I don’t like your friends”. I was like..WTF? is this guy kidding me? I told him it’s my bday and that I had made the reservations with Katherina. He told me…”ok..hold on..let me try to take care of you…but do me a favor and take care of me in return”.. Being the nice guy that I am.. I thought ok…ill slip him some $ for being such a “nice” guy. He went to talk to the lady (Katherina) whom I made the reservations and 3 min later, he returns and tells me..”ok..u can come to katherina and she will take care of you”…I thought to myself…”ok great..finally we can come inside, sit down and have a good time (When I made the reservations 2 weeks prior, the agreement was $1000 showcharge + 2 bottle minimum). When I came to Katherina hoping she would sit us down…she told me “it will be $1500 + 2 bottles + you will be sitting UPSTAIRS!. At that point, I was really pissed off. First the lowlife guy with the hat at the door outside insults my guests by telling me “he doesn’t like them” (and we were ALL dressed up according to The Box’s “Dress Code” (Jackets, & Outrageous) and now this Katharina lady whom I made the reservations is telling me it’s going to be $1500 which I would have agreed to if it was not for the “Upstairs seating” which sucks because you don’t get to be part of the show and the view is inferior. I was really pissed off and decided to leave and tell the guy at the door a few choice words. In conclusion.. I would like to say that I would not trust the box with your reservations if you are planning to go there. The show is filled with a lot of stuff you wouldn’t see anywhere but watching a guy stick a Jack Daniels bottom up his rectum and then take it out & drink from it is not worth the aggravations of the staff outside and their “policies”. If you want to be treated like dirt & insulted when you shell our $2,000++ for a night out then u can go to the box but I’m would not spend a dime at a place like that. This review does not do justice to the experience which we went through that night. As you can see from the other reviews..this is not something new.. the box is “known” for such antics.
