Studio 51 - If you make it through 1977 Beirut, better known as downtown Detroit, you might stumble upon Studio 51. Be prepared to shell out $10 for parking and get groped by the surprisingly metrosexual security staff. Once inside, you'll find this tri-level nightspot has a little bit for everyone;a dinner buffet, pool tables, a photo area, multiple bars, a flat-screen TV, an outside patio, and, of course, a dance floor. On the third floor, dance fuehrer Todd P relentlessly instructs the uninitiated on the latest Hustle and ballroom moves. Don't be surprised if he stops the music and to make sure you get it right--he doesn’t have a clue. He thinks mixing involves Kool-Aid, sugar and water. Drinks at the bar are moderately priced for downtown Detroit, but flash a smile to Monique, the star bartender, anyway. The crowd is young, urban, and overfed with men dressed in cuffed dress shirts and baggy jeans. Watch them slug down domestic beer while keeping an eye on the women wiggling their ample bootays in skin-tight jeans. If you like to ballroom dance and Hustle like you’re in step aerobic class, Studio51 is the club for you. But get there early--by 11pm it's standing room only on the third floor.
