Great potential but needs a little work
I visited Social on Saturday, 7/6/08. We arrived at about 10:45 and due to the amount of women in our group were allowed to cut the small line and go right in. My first impression was quite positive. The bouncers were friendly and well depressed. The atmosphere and decor in the bar downstairs was impressive and fit in well. I was a bit surprised however to notice that even with their supposedly high dress code a lot of the guests had on t-shirts and dirty sneakers. At about 11:30 when the crowd finally started to get bigger they opened up the second floor of the club, which included a large dance floor and several rooms with chairs, couches, and pool tables. The upstairs also looked great and the area was big enough to find a comfortable place to relax when you needed to take a break from dancing. The drinks were fantastic! The gal’s behind the bar obviously knew what they were doing and were anything but stingy with the liquor, I was very impressed.
Sadly, there were several things that made the night a bit of dud. First and most importantly I was not impressed with the DJ. While they played some great music and did a good job of mixing things up between songs, I don’t think they played a single song for more than thirty seconds to a minute the entire night. They made it incredibly hard to actually relax and dance, as you had to change things up almost every minute. Secondly, the climate control system was horrendous. While it was obvious that they had the air conditioning running, it hardly worked and there was zero air circulation. Even for those who weren’t dancing I heard plenty of comments that the place was just to hot. Next, while the drinks were fantastic I think they had to have been some of the more expensive ones I’ve ever had in a club. With an average price of 12 to 16 dollars a drink for my friends and I, it didn’t take long to run up a big bill! I was also not impressed with their glasses. After how much I paid for the drink, I thought it was rather cheesy that they served the drinks in cheaply molded plastic glasses with sharp edges that hurt your hand. Finally, if you have to use the restroom make sure you head downstairs. While the women’s room had a few stalls, the guy’s restroom upstairs was only equipped for one person and the line was quite long for most of the night.
I know this is a new club so I give them credit for a nice place, I just hope they continue to make some changes to make it a better place. The bouncers and staff were really friendly and on the whole the place was beautiful and had a great atmosphere. I will probably go again.
