And another one bites the dust; actually, make that another two. On the heels of the recent closing of nightlife haven Duvet, two more New York City establishments will be shutting their doors indefinitely. Nolita restaurant Kitchen Club and West 20’s hot-spot Aspen are being shut down, both as a result of the communities they were situated in.
Because of a weird proximity-to-a-church law (can’t serve alcohol in an establishment that is 200 feet from a church entrance – yes, this really does exist), the Kitchen Club was unable to serve alcohol at their establishment. After a hike in rent cost, owner Marja Samson simply couldn’t foot the bill without revenue from booze streaming in.
Aspen’s tale is a similar one. Because of community board regulations and a glitch in the license renewal process, this ski-lodge themed retreat was forced to shut its doors. Now, New Yorkers will have to get their Colorado fix elsewhere, whether it is at Aspen Social Club or, well, perhaps Colorado itself.
