In the 1600's it was a pair of Spanish breeches. In the 1920's, knickers were the bee's knees. But today, a unique, well-made pair of jeans is the 21st century staple of the trendy, urban male wardrobe. And because this is the information-technology era and not the industrial revolution, there are zillions of different fits, washes, and brands to choose from this fall. Here are your denim essentials to get you past the velvet rope:
Men's Jeans Trend #1:
Tar-Black Jeans
This color is perfect for those of us who don't make it to the laundromat too often. Sturdy black denim hides ketchup stains and looks badass with a pair of vans and some tats. This pair from Cheap Monday won't break the bank at a mere $65.00. If you're shotting for a more uptown look, try the Diesel Viker in black. This slim Italian jean has contrast white stitching on the back pockets ($160.00).
Men's Jeans Trend #2: Acid Wash
Okay, we know you're probably conjuring images of Joe Dirt, but the 80s are clearly still going strong in the fashion world (reference points: neon graphic tees, aviator sunglasses). Urban Outfitters stays true to the Saved By the Bell aesthetic with their BDG Acid Wash Denim jeans ($49.00), with a slim fit and a tapered leg. Pair with more subdued athletic shoes in an off-white or black, and you'll be looking rad instead of like a 1986 fashion victim.
Men's Jeans Trend #3: Taper Leg or Boot Cut?
The debate rages on. Although the slim, tapered fit has made a resurgence in the past few years, flared jeans are still going strong. The question about whether to cinch it in or flare it out is now answered by what scene you're with and what image you want to portray. The taper leg is a European look: the British and art institute-trained are more likely to rock a pair of spandex skinnies. The boot cut is a more American, casual look. Whether you're hitting the club or cracking open a beer for the game, try the True Religion flared "Joey" cut in Dark Vintage. This jean has a classic but unceremonious vibe ($172.00). Of course, there is middle ground in jean world: if you're neither nor in this fashion debate, you can always spring for a nice, comfy pair of straight Seven jeans in Relaxed, Worn Mercer ($194.00)
Men's Jeans Trend #4: Crayola Colors
Once upon a time in the early 90s, people apparently wore colored jeans. I don't remember wearing lite brite-colored Levis myself, although maybe I'm just in willful denial. However, if you were anxiously waiting for this trend to come back around, fall 2008 is your season. Just don't go too crazy: blustery October days and crackling brown leaves don't mix with bright yellow denim. We advise staying away from American Apparel's exploding-box-of-Fruit-Loops aesthetic. Keep things unique but toned-down with the Analog Remer Skinny Fit in a rusty red ($78.00)
