The Bloody Mary has been known and loved for years. It is the perfect cocktail for breakfast, lunch, dinner or just a quick way to enjoy some veggies while getting a buzz. Throughout history it has been disputed who actually invented the Bloody Mary. The best known inventor is an American bartender, Fernand Petiot, who was abroad in Paris and discovered a delicious drink that was half vodka and half tomato juice. When he came back into New York he decided to spice up the drink by adding black and cayenne pepper, Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco sauce and lemon juice.

Today, there are many cousins to the Bloody Mary, including the Bloody Geisha, where Sake replaces vodka and a Bloody Maria, where tequila replaces vodka. In the Northeast during the 1960s, there was a scarce on vodka and gin was used as a substitute. When vodka was finally readily available the “original” Bloody Mary was referred to as a Red Hammer.

One great adaptation that strays from the classic is Southern Hospitality’s Hickory Smoke Bloody Mary. This Memphis style Barbeque restaurant, owned by the smoking hot Justin Timberlake, brings a little bit of down-home south to the big city.
