It seems like there’s a new bar/club/restaurant/ugly blue condo monstrosity opening up every day on the Lower East Side.  But there was plenty going on pre-Schillers. These spots are keeping the old LES rockin’ and drinkin’ spirit alive.

Max Fish
176 Ludlow (Houston & Stanton)
212-529-3959

The old graffiti-ed standby is now a mob scene on weekends, but great for a pre- or post-show drink any other day of the week.

Botanica
47 E Houston (Mott & Mulberry)
212-343-7251

A hip scene without the hip attitude in the Knitting Factory’s former space.

Pink Pony
178 Ludlow (Houston & Stanton)
212-253-1922

Formerly a music venue attached to Max Fish, currently a great place to chill with a glass of wine and a good book.

Bowery Ballroom
6 Delancey (Bowery & Chrystie)
212-533-2111

Upstairs is the best place to see live music in the city, and the downstairs bar is the best place to booze with the musicians afterwards.

Mercury Lounge
217 E Houston (Ludlow & Essex)
212-260-4700

The stage area is almost as tiny as the bar, meaning you can see up and coming bands up close and personal.

Arlene’s Grocery
95 Stanton St (Ludlow & Orchard)
212-358-1633

It’s all about the bands here, with a handful playing each night, including a live backup band for karaoke on Mondays.

151
151 Rivington St (Suffolk & Clinton)
212-228-4139

You’ll be pleasantly surprised by 151’s clean, modern interior, blissfully long happy hour, and classic rock lovin’ DJs. If you can find it…

Whiskey Ward
121 Essex (Rivington & Delancey)
212-477-2998

Named after the Lower East Side’s old moniker, Whiskey Ward keeps it real with a wide selection and generously portioned “shot and a beer” combo specials.

Motor City
127 Ludlow (Rivington & Delancey)
212-358-1595

Put on your favorite black leather attire and come for the loud music, cheap drinks, and go-go dancer in the window.
