From NYC Hip-Hop to Hipsters: The Herbert Holler

WOW what a fugging weekend. Thursday night at Jelani was really nothing short of magical. We didn't have it wall-to-wall, but what we did have was a dance floor full of dancing spirits. Some of you ... let's just say you front hard, act all hardcore when the Dirty South shid comes on, but then, lo and behold, you come to FAMILY and you're on the floor sweating and working it out like "lemme find out you're a house head underneath that Yankees hat." Hahahah! I had no idea!!!!!!!!
Big up to the people last Thursday who stuck around to the end and shared the joy with me. Can't do it without you. We're on again this week, May 31! Cosi's back!

Then my nephews and niece came in from Chicago. The runts. The brat pack. Nah, they're really good little monkeys, but my sleep was deprived. Is that how it is when you have kids? Even when I could've slept, I didn't want to, because I wanted to go into their room and beat them up and stuff and have fun and make sure they haven't TOUCHED MY FRIGGIN TURNTABLES. If they did, I'd have to enact that thing they do in the Middle East, or Africa, or somewheres. "Which hand did you break my tone arm with, Calvin?" CUT THAT SUCKER RIGHT OFF!!! (Just kidding.) But I'd only cut off the left one, cuz he's right handed, and then how will he play skee-ball at Chucky Cheese? We went there, and I'm telling, I don't know if it was the salad or the hour skee-ball fest or the weird UFO machine that was making space noises that made me feel like I was hallucinating, but if you wanna get a good night's sleep, take 3 kids to Chucky Cheese.

I do love skee-ball, though. Used to play on the boardwalk in Atlantic City growing up. If my wife and I went to Chucky Cheese to play skee ball without kids, do you think they'd let us in? We have a serious competition going. She hit all 9 balls in the $4000 hole and got $36,000, but of course, I'm the king of all non- athletic games, so once I put 8 balls in the $4000 hole, I just had to go for the $5000 with the last one, and BONG! SORRY!!!! I'M THE BEST!

Friday night at FREEDOM ... well ... I don't know what to tell you. What have you heard? It was probably one of the top 3 best dj experiences of my career thus far. INCREDIBLE. Like, the floor of Canal Room seriously caved in at times. We were at capacity with a line down the block by midnight. 800+ people came out, 650 of you got in (thanks for waiting), the other 150 were kicking themselves for not heeding my weekly warning to come early. I definitely think Onyx's "Slam" took us to new heights, but the offical entry of "You Make Me Better" into the Freedom roster was quite a hit, too. And I love seeing smiles when I play Shawn Escoffrey's "Days Like This," the latest addition to our sets under the house classic category.

Big up to EVERYONE that came out. Dister, Ebony, Grand Puba (!!), Davina (!!!!!), Kevin Powell, Davina (I said "Davina." Yes. "So Good." That Davina.), C Black (thanks for bringing Davina), Big Stan and all the other birthdays and graduates and party people I forgot to mention. And there were WAYYYY too many females in there. What? You never heard somebody complain about too many females? Well, I like a good balance, and there must've been a 5 to 1 ratio. Where the hell were all my dudes?

Saturday I did the BBQ thing. Went out to CT with the family. I ate the following: 2 vegan dogs, 1 hamburger, 1.5 sausages, .5 hot dogs, 2 helpings of bean salad, 2 helpings of regular salad, 4 Buds and 2 cupcakes. EW! What a fat pig. Next year, they're going to take me out back, put me down and throw me on the barbecue.

Katra on Sunday night was fun. EVERYBODY got wasted and stumbled out of there. We had to turn the lights on at 10 after 4 so you guys would leave. Both floors were full, I did my thing, Hud crushed it downstairs, and, again, there was a 5 to 1 girl-to-guy ratio. Again, where the hell were all the dudes?? Marc Smooth was in the bathroom and overheard to excited chaps: "There's mad girls in here, son. The ratio must be 10 to 1." And I won't continue to write what they said, cuz that's private info and I will not reveal the goings-on in this secret society we call "Manhood." I'm no traitor. I'll never betray my brothers.

Except on that elephant walk shid. That was retarded. I hated that shid.

Now, you all know about Saturdays. I've been getting a good amount of RSVPs. I'm finally giving you a place to go, FOR FREE, where you can just chill-the-fug-out and listen to great music and meet down-to-earth, cool, stylish people Downtown.

Nobody else can give you that on a Saturday night, and you SHOULD be going out on a Saturday night anyways, so please come through. I'd love to see you there. I'm going to play soulful music you can dance to and/or drink to, and I got my conga player celebrity Larry Love at my side (he did the drums on ESG's classic house track "Moody"), and I got all my friends coming down this Saturday to make it a hot night. PLEASE DON'T MISS OUT!!! I'm calling this party "Heartbeat," because it's the beat of our hearts that makes us all brothers and sisters. We have the same blood coarsing through our veins, the rhythm moving us through the day, and it's about time we recognize.

One sun, one sky, one drum, one beat, one life, one love ... HEARTBEAT!

Last, you are all going to be very proud of me. Sunday night at Katra, I pulled my car up in front of the venue to load my stuff in at the end of the night. There was a cab driver in front of me who was reversing, but I had to get that spot to load my stuff, and besides, we were both double parking, and all's fair in parking war. He gets out and starts screaming and cussing and waving his hands. I was
about to do the same, but then something came over me and I just ... didn't. It was weird, but it was like the power of love took over my body and I just smiled, rolled down my window, and explained why I had to be there. The cabbie completely changed in a flash. He smiled back and said, "Oh. I didn't know. I'm sorry. No problem. Let me move."

Wow.

Love is in the air. Peace is in our hearts!
