Has
Avalon New York gone the way of Richard Hatch? The former Limelight Nightclub has been seized by the state for nonpayment of taxes, much like the birthday-suit-loving Survivor winner.
Although no public statement on the venue’s or state’s behalf has been made, these photos, taken this past Sunday, display the glaring neon sign stating the old church's status as confiscated state property.
“Any person,” states the Department of Taxation notice, “who attempts to tamper or interfere with this property will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.” Hmm. We’re wondering if the mischievous miscreant who scribbled “DAMN SHAME!” across the sign is protesting the merits of state-level tax enforcement

or pissed because they can’t tag the side of the building anymore.
In any case, this latest shutdown comes on the tail of a number of
nightlife tragedies, new
city legislation and
club closures this year…. Continuing the debate over whether all
bridges and tunnels should be shut down after 10pm from Tuesday through Saturday.
Let’s all hope 2007 ushers in more auspicious prospects for NYC nightlife.
