DJs Sell Their Souls As Disney Gets Its Hands On EDM
by Mikey Lavery
At first we all thought it was some kind of joke. The media outlets were sent the press release and within minutes emails were shared and calls were made to check if it was an early April's Fools. As the hours passed, it became more apparent that some of our favorite artists had indeed signed their souls to Disney, the result being DConstructed, a EDM album which features classic Disney songs remixed by people like Kaskade, Mat Zo, Armin Van Burren and Avicii. Yes, that’s right my dance music loving friends, we have finally lost all hope of our scene holding on to what little credibility it had left as "The Mouse" has a firm grip on EDM.
It's no secret that there was always the fear of the big money deals bringing problems to the dance music scene. It started with companies like SFX buying out smaller promoters and monopolizing the industry, and now it’s reached the point where Disney has got in on the action too. You think this is just one little album and I’m making a mountain out of a molehill? Not a chance. If this sells well, which it will, then this is only the beginning. And as long as there is money in the bank to write the checks, there will be more DJs willing to accept the payment for their services and before you know it, we'll see EDMLand in Disney parks. Okay, well maybe not, but it's Disney we're talking about and if they can convince come up with enough money for George Lucas to sign Star Wars, they can buy the rights to dance music.
Some of us will laugh, others will cry, but it will be the people who have latched themselves on to the big drops and floaty breakdowns since "EDM music was invented in 2012" who will buy in to all of it, They are the people who will scream for joy at hearing their favorite song from Toy Story dropped by a DJ at ULTRA (which will also be owned by Disney). Just wait and see! It wasn't so long ago we were all so proud that electronic dance music had been taken out of the underground and into people’s homes, we just didn’t think it would be in people's homes with a pair of Mickey's mouse ears and sprinkled with Tinkerbell's fairy dust.
Whether or not the artists appearing on the album will include the tracks on their sets when they play out has yet to be seen, or if it was indeed that they just wanted to make the remix for the paycheck "chance of a lifetime to be on a Disney album". It will, however, be very interesting to see if Kaskade’s version of Baby Mine from Dumbo will have a place in his setlist, or if Mat Zo will play Circle Of Life from The Lion King at his EDC gigs. I'd go as far to wonder if any of the remixes from DConstructed will ever get the chance to be heard over a big club or festival sound system, from any DJ. That being said, all credibility that surrounded theses guys is now out the window so who knows, maybe we will hear Armin drop Frozen's Let It Go on his ASOT tour and Axwell and Sebastian Ingrosso might just include Roar from Monsters University at their Light Vegas residencies. We all know that the more listens means the more sales, right guys? Well that's what Disney told you anyway...
