CLUBPLANET INTERVIEW: Cy Waits

CLUBPLANET INTERVIEW: Cy Waits

As one of the biggest names in the U.S. when it comes to nightclubs, Cy Waits has certainly earned his industry stripes. Both he and his twin brother Jessie are staples in the Las Vegas nightlife scene and, as the creator of Drai's Afterhours and Steve Wynn's Tryst at The Wynn and XS at Encore, Cy took the city's nightlife scene into the 21st century with profits previously unheard of in Las Vegas.

Now Cy is opening up his first nightclub in Miami called Adoré. We spoke to him about his latest venture, his musical tastes and what he does in his time off.

Cy, thank you for talking to Clubplanet. What was the thought process like on expanding to Miami Beach?
I've always loved Miami. I've been coming there for 12 years now, several times a year and I have so much fun. The people out here amaze me and it's a beautiful crowd. The whole city has a lifestyle to it and I wanted to be part of it.

Did you have other cities in mind?
It was always going to be Miami. There were no other plans. It's so hard to find a location here and it was a long time before we found the place we were looking for, but when we finally did we knew it was right. I love the city and always wanted a club here and, when I found the spot, I knew the decision was the right one.

What kind if differences do you see in Vegas vs. Miami in terms of the nightlife scene?
Vegas
has a crazy energy. People save all year to go to go there for a long weekend or on vacation and have such a good time there. With Miami, there is a culture that comes with the city. It's hard to explain. The clubs have a regular crowd who attend week in week out which adds to the atmosphere. The city also gets a large amount of Europeans who come here on vacation so there's a big difference in that aspect too.

What kind of bookings do you have in mind for the club?
We'll be going for the top acts but we want the club to be the star so we're not really thinking ahead about who we'll have performing. Yes, we'll be going big, but the club is our main focus.

What kind of experience do you want to create for your customer?
We're making it more than a bottle service club and, like you say, we want to create an experience for our customers. We have an incredible space and a beautifully designed layout that we feel will make everyone happy. From the door staff to the management, we want everyone to have fun and, most importantly, keep coming back!

Tell us about the decor and the cools extras to the club. You have cellphone chargers in VIP booths, heated baby wipes in women's bathroom. Where did those ideas come from?
I spoke to people like Steve Wynn and Victor Drai and learned a lot from them. They are the best at what they do and I learned a lot in my fifteen years with them; like how the internal colors or the ceiling heights count in the feel of a club. As for the extras, I can't tell you the amount of times I've been in a club and been down to my last bar on my cell phone. It gives me a massive case of anxiety. I just wanted people to have those little things that make a difference. As for the heated baby wipes, that was one of those discussions where we thought, why not!

Do you expect to enforce a dress code?
Yes, absolutely. It's fashionably upscale attire. We want everyone to look amazing.

Who are your favorite dance music artists just now?
I love Avicii. He's definitely one of my favorites but I'm a huge fan of deadmau5, Calvin Harris and Tiesto too. They're all doing an incredible job right now and have come so far in the past few years.

What do you do when you are outside the club scene?
Haha, right now I don't do anything than other work and sleep. I sleep from 10pm to 5am. When I do have time off, no matter how little, I spend time with my 10 years old daughter. That's my life and I wouldn't change it.

What has running a nightclub taught you that you will bring with you to Adoré?
I'm hoping that it all adds to the Adoré experience. I look at what everyone else has done here in Miami and I have so much respect for all the guys who already have clubs. I love what they've achieved here. All I want to do is add to the Miami experience and hope I do that well.

Thank you Cy Waits.
